I told you. Gentoo takes time... A LOT OF TIME ?

Laure

It is

took me 2 hours to get it on my computer...

It has the similar installation process as arch.. and I prefer arch than gentoo… It takes too much time and machine performance to do stuff..

I can fry an egg on this poor macbook

Gentoo downloads everything you install as source code and then compiles that.

Laure

09:40:42
there are still packages available as precomlied for those which don’t have source code available or too large

Tobias?

Of course? You are literally taking up to gigabytes of source code and build it on your machine, against other libs you need to build before.

Infact, if you dont want to wait for hours to update a window manager, dont use gentoo.

Because in Gentoo you compile everything. That's the difference with the other distros. It's not meant for daily use but to learn how things work.

Kohane
22.06.2017
09:42:34
That’s why it is in a VM??
Then it will take even more time because it's virtualising and that gobbles up resources.

Installing gentoo will teach you how gentoo works, not how linux works.

Fedora uses DNF, it doesn't redirects. YUM redircts to DNF.

dnf is faster, comes with more stuff by default and will be the project continuing to evolve. and yum X is aliased to "echo usedbf dnf X"

So scripts maintain compat for some time

there's Flatpak, but I doubt it will install the whole desktop

Thats just the apps - and frankly having those flatpak'd sounds horrible.

You can only install a few apps, the file manager, calculator, etc via flatpak..

Is it OK to sand box the file manager?

I am not a fan of another desktop, but they are just providing flatpak packages of the apps they did, I don't see anything wrong with that

browser, calculator, file manager and text editor - if you want to take a look, it's easy to do so using flatpak, I think it's nice

now if the whole desktop would run like this then it's a different thing

Fix your build and update your apps.

They want to have qml and qt everywhere

but DONT add a fucking execution environment around it because you dont want to keep them updated always and not provide a stable build.
