You should check a thermal system in that laptop, clean it and change thermal compound if necessary.

Switching to XFCE/LXDE would help to get load down, for sure.

Switch to living in Antarctica, that'll cool it down. XD

Of all the times I've used it, I've found that if you commit yourself to using it for a week without switching back, it becomes second-nature and it's easier to move around. Even for the configuration, I've only made a couple of changes to my setup, nothing too complex. However, the issues you might run into is if you use software that's heavily based in GNOME, like some extensions.

These days, the upgrade process is rock solid and a lot of work has been put into stabilizing this for the past few years. The DNF plugin is the best way to handle upgrades. If you want to start fresh because you're afraid you've accumulated junk and want a new starting place, that's fine, but as far as upgrades go, they're definitely reliable and trustworthy.
