There is a plenty of tools and apps that are meant to ease life with i3. Some of them are built in, some are installable.

In sum, it makes a nice DE.

My new office runs RHEL workstations and they have GNOME or i3 as options. I decided to finally go for i3 and get it working the way I want it now, so I've been tweaking it on my laptop for a bit to get the functionality I want.

It makes my workflow so much more efficient, which is why I love it

It was always small, specific things that made me switch back to GNOME, but I'm committed this time. :P

I don't use any DEs. Except I use lxappearance to configure GTK apps look. But it works without lxde being installed.

You can always choice when you have installed both of them on your login screen. Don't know about Gnome+i3 at the same time, but I have a successful experience with combining KDE and i3wm.
