True, AMD used to be such giant bullshit
I'm glad we now have actual competition

Linux isn't libre anymore since 2005. Now he starts to see his own mistakes but hasn't the balls to pull the plug and just remove the blob. Cm'on it's so easy to allow unsigned firmware on your devices, just pull the vendor's balls

Linus != GNU Hurd
Linux works, Hurd doesn't.

Linux-libre works too
point not proven
both kernels require selective choice of hardware
most of the blobs don't even work properly
see nouveau
see Ralink

Nouveau doesn't actually work.
But OK.

they can't reverse engineer them, it's useless, nvidia cards only accept signed firmware
linux has put hell into his own house by allowing vendors to get away with signed blobs

Linux isn't a small market on servers, Nvidia would definitely care if torvalds pulled the plug on nvidia blobs

Some people like to get stuff done with their computers.

Meruso
27.05.2017
15:19:40
especially because of quadro
those people can install these blobs as a dkms module
where's the problem. distros do this since ages anyway
even debian separates the blobs from the kernel, linux-firmware is where it's at to provide blobs.
Put a checkbox, like ubuntu does it and people are fine.

Touch doesn't work, CPU and GPU will run at full power, you need special firmware that is not in mainline kernel
the type cover won't work either

the surface 4 is going to get cheaper though
the thing about paying such a high price for a product is, that if it's the right product, sometimes it's justified paying such a high price if the product is actually still worth the price and doesn't drop rapidly

not worth it without proper linux support
and with that I mean, proper linux-libre support. Not like on my old computer that I had to throw away because AMD decided that the blob no longer gets updated, being stuck at kernel 2.6
Actually my mom kept using it but then the PSU died

I'm using Vivaldi at the moment. It's a nice browser, but it eats RAM like Chrome.

You can cope with the RAM eating by installing "The Great Suspender" addon from the Chrome Store easily enough, and the rest of the features of Vivaldi have made it quite a decent choice for Chrome lovers. It's like Chrome with a lotta the nastiness fixed. ;)

Aye. That's actually normally my primary browser. I'm trying out Vivaldi only because it's new to me, and because I actually kinda liked Chrome other than it bein' a memory hog. Vivaldi's better than Chrome, honestly, but I'll be goin' back to my trusty old Firefox soon. :)
