according to that, it wasn't RH, but RH started sponsiring it recently

In short, Red Hat has Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution which is open source but not free as in beer, it is bought by many companies because of support RH provides; but as it is open source CentOS guys took the sources and are rebuilding it with modified logos and names to avoid trademark problems; so CentOS is RHEL minus support, logos and with a changed name

Red Hat as a company has no problem with it, as anyone buying RHEL does so for the support anyway

that's how I understand it; note that I am in no way affiliated with any of those other than I've used CentOS a few times and I am user on some servers equipped with RHEL ;)
