What's Riot?

It's a messaging thing, that looks like a crossover between Telegram and IRC and it's open source.

It's based on Matrix.org so you actually have many different clients to suit your preferences and if none it's your cup of tea you can make a new one.

BTW, L your issue about the icon missing in the top bar (alongside the soffice thing)... it's related to the theme you use. I just tried and some Shell themes show the icon correctly and others don't. The ultimate reason for this happening is unknown to me, but I can research if you want.
