Agreed with @williamjmorenor. elementary has Pantheon, but the desktop environments are present across distributions. I don't know if I consider desktop environments what makes distros unique (any more), but rather their packaging policies and approach to how they bring software to the user. For example, Fedora's reputation for moving quickly and working with the latest versions of software.

with systemd and app containers hopefully distro fragmentation is reduced. it should be easier to install and distribute things on Linux - right now we have a situation where something is either shipped by a distro or shipped only for Ubuntu and RHEL
