Void is good, uses some bsd stuff, and is light AF. Package management is a tad hard, though...

Devuan is still undercooked, IMO..Atleast, for now.

I keep hearing some crap about Linux mint being insecure, any thoughts anyone??

From what aspects? ?
The update thing. They have different update levels and you can turn off kernel updates for beginners.

Look in /etc/sudoers.d on an installed Linux Mint system and then ask yourself if allowing applications password less sudo is acceptable.

Look in /etc/skel on an installed Linux Mint. Compare that with Debian and Ubuntu. Ask yourself if perhaps Mint are hacking stuff together. Is it wise for every Linux Mint user to have the same Firefox profile.

Look at the defaults for the update manager. If you fully update a Linux Mint system with the defaults and then enable everything and update again. How many security updates did you just get?

This guy, @MichaelTun has a lot to say on the subject. I'd like for someone to clarify if he has a point or if his points are based on the fact that he's an Ubuntu mate contributor....

I feel I would better to stick by a major distribution for which I can find a decent community like this to help me out when things go wrong

They managed to get their website hacked, see kernel updates as dangerous and for some reason updating the kernel actually made me break mint several times too. And yes, with all that combined it is of significantly lower security.

A distribution needs to continually test and update all of its packages - for some its just security updates and others just do all the good stuff. Mint doesnt have the resources, manhours or even community to achieve doing so.

Distros are undertested

All of them

The suse automatic testing software is the best thing ever in this respect

Fortunately, Fedora uses it, I believe

Fedora manages to put more QA and testing into a kernel than most in a shorter time than it takes even arch to release a kernel usually. And if arch is updated but you arent you can be sure QA testing revealed bugs. XD

gsettings set org.gnome.software download-updates false sudo systemctl mask packagekit.service

That should stop gnome software center autodownloads as well as packagekit schedule

I advise you to keep a weekly update schedule from then on manually if you do switch that off.

The only thing you need to do as well is reboot for kernel updates since they won't be applied otherwise.

Also sudo dnf update --best --allowerasing --refresh

First it refreshes the package list, then enforces updating packages even if some may have unmet dependencies (like cockpit changing cockpit-shell and moving it into the package, which would otherwise not be updated)

Open terminal and run: sudo systemctl disable dnf-makecache.service sudo systemctl disable dnf-makecache.timer Then open /etc/dnf/dnf.conf in any text editor and add to it's end: metadata_timer_sync=0 Now you can remove dnf-automatic if installed: sudo dnf remove dnf-automatic

Same here, but some devs think it is a good idea to have those features enabled out of the box as if the entire rest of the world were First World Category countries with high quality and cheap Internet connections.
