Do you tried with a netinstall iso + minimal install + basic graphic?
I remember that for fedora 21 I had this problem on an HP laptop with amd proc and ati graphics.
The live workstation booted but got stuck at some point on installation or when pressing the function key to fix screen brightness.
The minimal install was small enough to install without getting stuck and pulled the most up to day packages without the bugs.

Yea I was able to get Fedora installed using the MATE spin
then I installed gnome from the repos and it bricked the laptop

It is possible to install fedora via command line without a graphical installation environment? Same as Archlinux or debian?

the keyboard backlights died and won't work anymore and the display manager just shows a black screen with a mouse cursor and does nothing else
I've tried for a week now to fix it
tried every grub parameter, installed the nvidia drivers from the website, blacklisted nouveau, tried nomodesetting
nothing works

I can get it installed, I just can't get it to run gnome
it has a problem I think with wayland?
or something, IDK
F23 worked fine
I installed it and gnome ran without a problem
but F24 refuses to work
even installing 23 first then updating, installing 24 via a different spin, etc
I have one of those Asus ROG laptops
but ew windows, no thanks

hrmm I installed it with Mate spin and then ran 'dnf groupinstall gnome'

then I disabled LightDM from systemd
stopped it, ran GDM
logged in
and my keyboard lights cut off and it crash looped
Why ?
Because F23 installs without a problem on the same machine
but F24 can't even get to anakonda screen

the machine is the same, the variable is the Fedora version
so I'm guessing it's 24 being a problem
I hard they have wayland in the background preparing for F25
so I think maybe my GPU doesn't like it

is that wrong way?
Not sure, but workstation-desktop-environment provide all the subgroups required to run gnome. I think gnome only just provide a basic set of packages and might be missing something in the process.

Mate doesn't require 3D acceleration as gnome do, that might be the reason why Mate works and gnome doesn't.
yea Nvidia 965m (non optimus)
Try with a minimal install. Then try installing base-x group packages, the install nvidia proprietary binary following www.if-not-true-then-false.com guide/howto, the install gnome on top of that.

Did Gnome change from F23 -> F24?
The only thing I read was something about implementing Wayland to prepare to make it default for F25

Without a stable desktop on which try this is difficult to try possible solution, given installing the proprietary binary require run level 3 you will be fine.

I don't have time to do that right now because I go to work soon
but I will try Net install -> drivers -> gnome
when I next have time to sit down and do it
otherwise I'm either going with OpenSUSE or Arch
sadly
BUT, I might be installing F24 on my main rig soon
