But they will screw up people whenever there is possibility to introduce fake obstacles to make move everyone to win 11. Like, some drivers wont install on win 10 with artificial limit to win11 only
Ah, so the issues and annoyances of Wayland and systemd have caused frustration among users and reduced the number of members in the free software community?

No. Open source keeps shotting itself in foot by undoing all work that is already complete. Beginning rewrities and redesigns, but is there enough manpower and resources to not only implement previous functionality, but offer something new? Its not to the question that Wayland *is* better in terms of performance. But my take on Wayland that its not good idea to move responsibility to implement common video server functionality in the DE composers. Now we have even more fragmentation in open source. For example, KDE's KWin wayland compositors performs very good, and GNOME's compositors has high latency

But I'm more satisfied with Wayland than Xorg because it's really faster.

its not stable and widely used enough for my usage

FreeBSD Project is much better software delivery and maintaining effort. Where on FreeBSD I always have latest stable version of software I need, on Linux system I have to gamble with gnu automake. Heck, I do have to look into FreeBSD ports first to figure out how to build it on Linux 😁

Thing is we wont have this choice in future. Packages will move to wayland-only.

Can I ask exactly what shortcomings you feel in Wayland? I have been researching Wayland for a long time, and maybe I can help address that shortcoming.
Artel
this and using boot2 to bypass loader might be of your use :)

i am talking about present, when the situation you are mentioning will happen is when i will switch

I don't really have much knowledge about FreeRDP at the moment, and the problem might be with it. But I don't have any issues with remote desktop on my Fedora Linux, which uses Wayland. Maybe the problem is with FreeRDP, since you mentioned you're experiencing the same issue on X11

freebsd's loader is very heavy for the exact same reasons, you don't need those customisations when your priority is to boot the default kernel fast af

I think FreeBSD's bootloader tries to handle everything during the boot stage and doesn’t leave any processes for the login screen phase. In my opinion, it would have been better if the login screen loaded faster and ran in parallel with some unrelated processes. This would result in a high-speed boot experience.

i myself am trying to figure out why only sysinit 0x400000 takes 2 seconds, but haven't been successful yet
polyduekes
there can be some speed improvements made at the stage of init(8) startup
polyduekes
Can you elaborate?
init takes 4 seconds to just start
B
init takes 4 seconds to just start
Are you sure that it is /bin/init itself taking 4 seconds to start or do you mean it is the rc scripts that init launches are taking 4 seconds ?

Have you installed Gnome on your Freebsd?
Mahdi
is it not gnome terminal?

it's xfce terminal

Oh, that is more beautiful than i imagined 🥲

Does anyone have an usb hub that is known to work on freebsd?

i have TP-Link USB hub and it works with any OS like Freebsd :)

Hi everyone, how are you? I am working on a project on FreeBSD. Can you recommend an affordable laptop that is fully supported by FreeBSD? This means that all the hardware features of the laptop should be supported by FreeBSD, as sometimes, due to proprietary drivers, it cannot work with certain modules. Thank you.
Mahdi
My budget is between 120 USD and 240 USD.

Hi, I'm fine. What about you? I've never installed it on a laptop so I can't help you

thanks. i have installed it on WorkStation and it works done but im like you, i've never installed it on laptop !

I find your project interesting. Good luck!

the most wide answer to this date, for that price: a used thinkpad with intel cpu. The T480 could make the job. take a look at bsd-hardware too. Here's the query for the tested T480s: https://bsd-hardware.info/?view=computers&type=Notebook&vendor=Lenovo&model=ThinkPad+T480+%28All%29 and here in the wiki you have a table with more compact view of working and non working laptop components of a large collection of models: https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops

https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/KernelProgramming/BSD/BSD.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000905-CH214-TPXREF101 what you said is completely wrong, there are multiple things for macOS kernel taken from bsd, namely some of them are descriptors, memory management, resource management, networking facilities, signals etc

is there something like mseal or mimmutable on freebsd

That it technically has parts of the BSD kernel like the IP stack

well as far as we got was finding berkeley in strings of some windows utilities, so the windows using bsd code situation is much less clear compares to apple's
Emp. Jasmine
Ah, my understanding was that xnu is not a bsd kernel
Emp. Jasmine
But tbh i am unsure what that actually means

It was based on mach, iirc
it's a frankenstein, you can't put it in anywhere comfortably, for example even for memory management, it takes some mem management facilities from bsd and some from mach https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/KernelProgramming/Mach/Mach.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000905-CH209-TPXREF101

I'm having some issues with my laptop and finding the devices.. trackpad and keyboard.. it's an HP 832A (or Laptop 15 bs1xx).. while in console, everything works, but once I start x, both trackpad and keyboard just seems to lock up
Andrei Drusian
You need install: pkg install xf86-input-mouse pkg install xf86-input-keyboard
Andreas
doesn't help, I'm afraid
Andrei Drusian
pkg install xorg pkg install xorg-server pkg install xf86-input-mouse pkg install xf86-input-keyboard pkg install xf86-video-intel (nvidia / amd ) pkg install xinit
Andrei Drusian
that's what you need for X to work, the keyboard and mouse
Andrei Drusian
after installing you need to kill and start X again.
Andreas
I have all of those packages installed.. and I have also enabled hw.psm.synaptics_support="1" in /boot/loader.conf, but at the end of Xorg.0.log, it talks about some keyboard muxer.. and looking around, the driver is i8042 which there's a lot of workarounds for other OSes
Andrei Drusian
x is going up, right?
Andreas
yes.. but keyboard/touchpad is dead

if I run that, I seem to be getting a black screen

as in, Xorg -config xorg.conf.new
