it was wrong after i had used freebsd-update and before i compiled a kernel
Jekyll
Jekyll
There's something unusual but not wrong, did you see it?
polyduekes
versionaddendum in ssh_config has nothing to do with kernel's patch level bump and i don't think this discussion is going anywhere now so i am dropping out

can i use bhyve to host linux VM (let it be antix linux) and accessing R/W ntfs, luks2 and btrfs volumes through it?

can i use bhyve to host linux VM (let it be antix linux) and accessing R/W ntfs, luks2 and btrfs volumes through it?
also I would recommend exporting these filesystems as NFS, so you can easily use them on BSD host
Михаил
freebsd has ntfs-3g package
it introduces damages to my system. last time .git was damaged and caused me to download the tree again. much inconvenience. yes i know to unmount this first, but due to graphics drivers my system hangs and i have nothing to do but hard reset
Михаил
is nvidia-drm-kmod opensource?
Михаил
citing https://www.freshports.org/graphics/drm-515-kmod/ (my current driver page), Please note that this package was built for FreeBSD 14.1. If this is not your current running version, please rebuild it from ports to prevent panics when loading the module. so rebuilding would help if I'm on 14.2-RELEASE? done, hoping there's no kernel panics after that..
Михаил
so far no one kernel panic o_o nice
Artel
so far no one kernel panic o_o nice
because FreeBSD just works.
Михаил
it used not to..
Михаил
14.1 won't even accept keyboard input on my laptop

local_unbound caches servfail response, anyone knows how this behavior can be tweaked?

On Reddit, a user exposes the FreeBSD system with a well-configured and customized desktop environment
Neruq
Nice. KDE or Gnome?
No, it's a light environment, there's a lot of commentary
Neruq
You can share the link here yep
Yes, of course, after a moment that I arrive at the house, I share the link.

but yeah the wifi problem is real
Neruq
the comment section....is interesting
For me it is interesting everything, how the user exposes the system, the comments and others.
Neruq

And as the user exposes his WiFi...

In the outlook it looks like we will soon have FreeBSD system with graphical desktop environment by default, that's what the survey says for laptops and desktop computer.
polyduekes
😐
i don't think they will do that with every iso
polyduekes
but only specific iso build for desktop like gentoo does
polyduekes
gentoo has a livecd iso which comes with kde by default

I wonder why userland will be not updated after freebsd-update fetch install and then reboot. The output will be: #freebsd-version -kru 14.2-RELEASE-P1 14.2-RELEASE-P1 14.2-RELEASE-p2 🤔🙄 I mean will be updated but not will be applied after reboot...🙄😬
Tyler
Actually it's only userland updated.
Ahh, i see. So i should have wait with this update a little more? It was a bit early then? 🤔

No need, the update is completed already. Kernel is not affected.

btw after seeing the freebsd desktop user reddit post yesterday, i felt like posting how mine looks so here it goes

installed in may 2024, never needed to reinstall after that, the experience has been smooth sailing except some issues with specific ports :)
Tyler
I like this oldschool setup much more then hyperland stuffs. 👍
Tyler
I was trying hyprland but honestly not my type. So went back classic xfce. Hopefully xfce will fully support wayland soon but it is not a big deal for me.
Tyler

But is this normal? I would expect if a new patch coming out then should be affecting the kernel also...🙄
Tyler
it was a patch for preincluded ssh
Nice. I did snapshot before update so i did rollback. I was thinking my update process broken...🙄
Tyler
ChatGPT a bit funny 🤣 This is what gave me answer for my question. ME: According to this https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/poudriere-jail-base-system-is-14-2-release-p2-but-hosts-base-system-is-14-2-release-p1-after-updating.96946/ i dont think my upgrade process went wrong. I think FreeBSD did not issue yet patch 2 for kernel. Or? What do you think? ChatGPT: You're absolutely right! Based on that forum discussion, it seems that FreeBSD has released patch 2 (p2) only for the userland, not the kernel. That explains why freebsd-version -k (kernel) is still at P1, while freebsd-version -u (installed userland) is at P2. Why does this happen? FreeBSD applies patches separately to the kernel and userland. If a patch only affects userland components (e.g., libraries, utilities), the kernel remains unchanged. freebsd-version -kru reflects this distinction: -k (kernel) → Still at P1 -r (running userland) → Still at P1 (matches the running system) -u (installed userland) → Updated to P2 What Should You Do? Nothing is wrong with your system. It’s just that FreeBSD hasn't released a kernel patch P2 yet. You can double-check this by looking at FreeBSD's official security advisories or update logs: freebsd-update fetch If there's no kernel update available, you’re fully updated. Final Confirmation This is expected behavior, so no need to worry or force an update. If FreeBSD later issues a kernel patch (P2 or higher), freebsd-version -kru will reflect it after applying the update. 😁

https://www.freebsd.org/status/report-2024-10-2024-12 freebsd status report for anyone interested, the calls for 25 q1 status report has also begun so expect them soon as well
polyduekes
hmm, i have been hearing about pkgbase a lot, what's the issues with freebsd-update?
polyduekes
hmm, this might sound like a controversial opinion, but in my opinion the idea of adding hardware and wifi support using linux drivers and a compat layer is a bad one, hardware drivers should be native without translation as they are performance critical
polyduekes
today was the day freebsd kernel panic crashed for me
polyduekes
pretty rare compared to how many times it used to happen on linux for me

is it possible to mount erofs images in freebsd?
polyduekes
how do i get this deleted
polyduekes
there is another one it seems

nvm, mdconfig -d -u worked
Maxim
did you first unmount /mnt? it should have told you something in the likes of "operation not permitted" if you did mdconfig -du before unmounting it
Maxim
yeah, good
polyduekes
is it possible to setup a specific version of llvm system wide to be used when building any port?

sorry but do you mean the CFLAGS variable?
Emp. Jasmine
have you tried coding c# in it?
I'm not much of a coder and mostly use the editor for markdown and such.
polyduekes
In a perfect world yes, but with limited resources this needs to be done .
wdym perfet world, even in normal world, the world we live in that's how things are done, that's how drivers are made normally, and since the foundation was pouring down so much money to hire expert devs, writing native drivers should be a possibility for them, have you ever heard if any other os doing anything like this? no, because this is wrong
