Funnily enough, my freebsd box would only boot to a graphical interface by using no xorg.conf file what so ever.

running $ kldstat should list your graphics module if enabled, other checkings I usually do with glxinfo as before. I don't know other ways so far, maybe someone else here does

From this bug, it seems like the error is fixed on version 2.17 so check if you have the same version
