Hi people is it possible run linux firmware module on freebsd?
Through a Jail, maybe using compat. Some people run WiFi like that
r2g2
what exactly do you mean by linux firmware? a firmware is software that runs on a device ... with linux firmware are you referring to linux-based firmware like coreboot?
r2g2
also: if your device is not supported in FreeBSD you cannot simply use a driver from another OS, with the exception of the NDIS wrapper stuff, but that should be avoided anyways
Mmmm
anyone able to install office 365 using wine?
Kaan deyil🤨🤨🤨
And it has linux firmware. I am looking for a way for running on freebsd this card
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Um my wifi card not supported on freebsd but it supporting linux
Best options are: - change wifi card - change OS

Changing wifi card is not suitable for me now. And any of freebsd based OSs not supporting my card
.
Can someone point me to good documentation on custom kernel configuration on FreeBSD? I’m specifically looking for information on how one determines which parts of the kernel you keep for the machine’s hardware and which parts you can safely discard.

You can always buy a WiFi adapter and plug it via usb. 802.11ac being not supported is a reality so if you want to keep using FreeBSD that can be also a solution. Another thing you can try is this https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/u82xg6/80211ac_on_freebsd_with_wifibox/
r2g2
wifibox could help you, however, there are issues with device-pass-through in bhyve
.
Why you are going to customize freebsd kernel?
I would like to make a custom kernel with only the modules I need for my hardware. Three different older laptops.
Chris
since I am in this channel (and GhostsBSD) I see so many people struggling with WiFi, why not something like this? openwrt mini wlan router, can even be powered from your usb port.... set up wlan on such a box, plug in on LAN port... WIN: https://tinyurl.com/4sbfvmrf
Chris
getting not supported wifi cards to work is almost masochistic
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
That url seems not to be working at all in my side

ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Oh, cool!
r2g2
yes, wifi unfortunately sucks on FreeBSD (and also on the other BSDs)
Chris
not if you look what is supported before using BSD 😂
r2g2
even before ... it just sucks that especially many modern wifi devices just do not work and that one has to spend time and do research if he/she wants to use wifi
Chris
I have a combination of that in an OPNsense box (which is based on BSD) and have perfectly fine working wifi: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07NBMCJZV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Chris
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01N2O81W7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
r2g2
you can get it working, however, doing a benchmark with e.g. Linux leaves BSD in the dust
r2g2
I do not have that time so as soon as my clients want decent wifi FreeBSD/OPNsense is usually out
Chris
well, at least for desktop/server there are enough supported wifi cards available
Chris
that Atheros I posted has native support and works perfect
.

Yes I’ll do that. I was reading the sticky topic link which seems to have a lot of information. 👍🏻

anyone able to install office 365 using wine?
Would be useful but I prefer using a win livecd for tasks like that
Anonymous
you are talking about bootable usb win ?
Well, it's kinda off topic, but u can make you own windows live cd with the programs that you want https://github.com/pebakery/pebakery
Anonymous
I don't support the use of proprietary software
r2g2
... yeah, why not use bhyve with a windows vm if you rely on o365
Mmmm
... yeah, why not use bhyve with a windows vm if you rely on o365
I used bhyve but it was a bit delay copying and paste picture, change tab, etc. It was not as smooth as you run 365 natively.
r2g2
then adjust the settings with cpuset, renice, sysctl kern.sched.preempt_thresh
r2g2
and use rdp instead of vnc
How many lines of code the FreeBSD kernel has ?
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
including comments ?
Hardcode
why.
Hardcode
oh.
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
If so then we may need some cleaning
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
@Leuchs what are you seeking? Just asking to know where the point is
Belgacem
Hi! Who has issues with textext, the Inkscape extension line me ? Can't install it with "python setup.py" from the sources.
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
@Leuchs what are you seeking? Just asking to know where the point is
Cause for Linux that is public information. Why not for FreeBSD too ? People are curious.

Well, that's just a number. FreeBSD kernel isn't closed source, it can be counted on the repo
Jakob
Is there any more to it than 'wc -l *'?
Jakob
Well, I understand. I'm not a programmer. Thank you.
Would be a nice exercise to learn c if you ask me
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Well, I understand. I'm not a programmer. Thank you.
Oh, then do as Jakob says, clone the src and do a wc -l *
Is there any video guide on how to build/compile FreeBSD to make it a desktop ? I'm pretty noob to do it by myself.
Candy
How many lines of code the FreeBSD kernel has ?
I'd recommend you use the cloc tool to get a good number for this.
theres a tool called desktop-installer
So I don't need any guide if I use that ?
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
So I don't need any guide if I use that ?
The tool should guide you. You can also take a look at the pinned video. It's an official guide for setting up a desktop on FreeBSD

I have a question does freebsd include binary blobs?
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
what is a binary blob ?
Wintermute
what is a binary blob ?
a proprietary binary bundled in the OS, usually firmware stuff
Wintermute
the idea is that the source code is proprietary so they can only ship pre-compiled binaries
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
Im actually fmiliar ! seens to me those questions are usually asked having a GNU licence in mind
Wintermute
like nvidia proprietary drivers if i recall correctly
Wintermute
yes, aren't those usually in a separate repository? Like "nonfree"
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
not really ! it does not make sense to me but the kerneel( the lnux kernel ) has an official version and "deblob" version
r2g2
FreeBSD does not include blobs, however, you can install them
🇵🇸🍉
I heard it does.
So what freebsd stand for?
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
I heard it does.
No it does not ! I think that's pretty clear

WDYM?
"Free" in freebsd
Anonymous
I heard it from OpenBSD users.
Some of them use OpenBSD because of this.
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
anything talking around on trying to move the opinion in a different direction is kind of trolling

"Free" in freebsd
I do not think "Free" is related to "Binary BLOB".
