2022's first issue for FreeBSD journal. This issue covers Contributing to ports in FreeBSD, the process of converting OpenBSD pf's syncookies to the FreeBSD version, an interesting article covering CBSD, and more practical content https://freebsdfoundation.org/past-issues/software-and-system-management/ #freebsd #magazine #cbsd #ports
Also this magazine is again about the ports. Since 2003 I am using FreeBSD daily (the raw stuff), still I have no clue who calls the shoot/sets the roadmap. Now I know more about Twitter than I know about FreeBSD after 20 years. I also stopped contributing. Is FreeBSD also some billionaires toy or is it the OS preferred by Aliens as suggested in the movie, Jurassic Park? Cheers to all.

She says it is all about the community. So why did I get deleted from this group after my above post?

2002 I was shocked to find out that some hackers where 24/7 attacking my servers. Script kiddies or real I could not tell at the time. FreeBSD formed me in being strong enough to withstand any DDoS of poking. I like that idea. FreeBSD is the last line of defense. It would be a pity if FreeBSD had to hide behind something else (like a safe zone).

Indeed, why is it sooooo hard to find useful info? How can I also get into the inner circle?

ARM in FREEBSD (or FreeBSD in ARM)... There are some specific problems that I would like to see if someone already have a way to solve... Like... Boot FreeBSD on "Orange-PI R1+ LTS".

I don't know any specific group for ARM in FreeBSD, but this chat is more than welcome on a conversation for this. I'm also looking for resources on that field

ARM Cluster
Leonardo
I have a Small cluster with mixed ARM SBC. 1 RPi4b 1 RPi3b 1 Orange-Pi R1+ LTS 1 BPi M2 Plus
Leonardo
just "Orange-Pi R1+ LTS" is not running FreeBSD
Leonardo
Because it's serial console is not working properly and I it do not connect to my DHCP server (even with network blinking)
Leonardo
The other problem that I have is with "BPi M2 Plus", that is a armv7... There are many packages that doesn't exist for it, and I am not able to build a rust and/or golang packages, because it need more memory to build

+1
Leonardo
sure I need. But if there is an effort to build that kind of package, I could publish it, instead of do it only for myself.
Leonardo
Problably I will work with a virtual machine, because my main computer is an MacOS.

Hey guys. Today I installed FreeBSD for the first time and when Xorg is starting up, I get the error "1d-elf.so.1: Shared object" libXfont2.so.2" not found, required by "Xorg" I've tried compiling libXfont2, but after that it still didn't work. Any ideas how to solve this probpem?
Rasoul
@n0madcoder
Krond
Did you try to install it from packages?
Rasoul
Did you try to install it from packages?
Yeah, before I tried compiling it.
Krond
Okay, you compiled libXfont2, installed it, ldconfig?
Rasoul
Okay, you compiled libXfont2, installed it, ldconfig?
Should I enter ldconfig in terminal?
Rasoul
I just did and still the same error

run desktop-installer and see if it will bring in what you need.
Rasoul
Ok thx I'll try and see if it solves the issue

There's a guy in the GhostBSD channel that was looking at getting GBSD working on a Pi, his channel name is Fred Finster, perhaps give him a go
Beeno
hi everybody
Beeno
i'm a newbie of bsd world and i've just installed on a vm.It can't go beyond the 1024x768 resolution and i'd like to set it at 1920x1080...any advice?
Chris
what VM?
Beeno
virtualbox
Beeno
on an old 2009 (but smoothly working) iMac
Beeno
i'd like to get used to it before install it bare metal on an Amd A8 desktop as home server(for music, films and documents)
Beeno
i like the rock solid nature of bsd that everyone so far recognizes
Beeno
Plus even if i'm far away (very far to be honest) of being an expert i think that freebsd must be supported
Beeno
and encouraged
Chris
hm, check if theres a difference in the graphics settings (vbox-svga etc.) and you need the extension-pack installed on the host I think
Beeno
ok thank you Chris!
Joey
does beehive not do it for you? I use virtualbox all the time, but could never get it to work on FreeBSD, only on Linux
Joey
if it works for you, great
Joey
or wait, you're talking about a BSD guest, sorry
Joey
I do run FreeBSD in VMs all the time... but I've noticed that I get better results if I export the desktop (KDE in my case) via VNC

Hi Anyone know best way to migrate Freebsd server to AWS
Joey
Does FreeBSD even run on AWS?
Jeff
of course. there are official ami's available in every region I've used. thank tarsnap and Collin for all the hard work to create and maintain all that.
Joey
Bazil: just one server? Install all your packages on the new server, set up the users, copy your data, and for the configuration you can mostly just copy over the relevant files from /etc and /usr/local/etc, plus any oddball stuff you might have
Chad
Joey that is the beauty of freebsd... It has saved me a couple of times.
Bazil
I tried with AWS import option. but ended up with error ""Status": "deleted", "StatusMessage": "ClientError: No valid partitions. Not a valid" volume." https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vm-import/latest/userguide/vmimport-image-import.html
