Well I have already tried FreeBSD on VirtualBox but I mean... I just want this thing to run. And the main reason I would go with NomadBSD for example, is that I wouldn not need to spend half a day downloading packages from a slow-ass mirror. (They are "slow" even when I change them)

I can but assume FreeBSD is similar but much much quicker.
