You can actually install linux on your phone and connect to it via VNC even on your own smartphone (to have a gui)
Dog
that's cool
Eliab/Andi
looks amazing
dapit
It should be much better with android tabled then

The last photo shows VNC connected to a phone on a normal laptop.

So I'm using my phone's Linux on my laptop

especially on the new smartphones with 8+ GB of ram

This would work with a phone as well huh?
Flamingo ๐Ÿ”’๐Ÿฆฉ๐Ÿค
don't know TBH

But Termux doesn't work with GUI, that's why you have to use VNC
Anonymous
it worked well actually
What did you used ?

What did you used ?
It's an Android phone running Termux.
./pascal.sh
is this an official freebsd group? :D
./pascal.sh
OK im currently building an opnsense firewall based on the apu4d4 board and in the future I am going to get a freebsd server
Carl
cool, i am sure many people here will be able to guide you when the time arrive
Carl
by the way ... wellcome
Carl
./pascal.sh
Thx
./pascal.sh
Oh and i also wrote a blog about freebsd some time ago maybe someone wants to check it out and maybe correct me if I wrote something wrong on there I wrote this blog two years ago https://freebsd81949087.wordpress.com/
./pascal.sh
No problem
./pascal.sh
Mh I'm still searching for a decent nas where I can put freebsd on Can someone recommend me something ? Best would be max 400-500โ‚ฌ and it should not eat up that much power. I need gigabit speeds and enough storage for backups and other files
./pascal.sh
Jay
Yeah mirror + 2 small partitions for slog, rest l2arc
Jay
HP microserver gen8 has 2 Gigabit interfaces
./pascal.sh
OK i think one will be enough What should i do with 2 interfaces? My firewall is an apu4 board running OPNSense, so I don't need the server for routing my traffic just for streaming / nas use
Jay
You might lose cache, you should not lose slog
Jay
2 interfaces for lagg: https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/network-aggregation.html
Jay
Gigabit is just 110mb/s. With aggregation and with multiple clients you should get more
./pascal.sh
Oh OK But I am not sure if my routing hardware can handle more than 1 gigabit I have a pcengines APU4D4 board running opnsense
Jay
OK then gigabit should be enough
./pascal.sh
I just found a dell precision t1650, refurbished with a Xeon e3-1225v2, 24gb ddr3 ram and a 256 GB ssd For 270โ‚ฌ not bad
Arminio
Quite the steal, did you already put it to good use?
./pascal.sh
Quite the steal, did you already put it to good use?
I have not bought anything yet, I'm just searching for a cheap home server
Arminio
Oh okay :)
./pascal.sh
Looks really good but I have to save a bit of money for it
./pascal.sh
Can someone recommend me good drives for nas usage?
./pascal.sh
I though about seagate iron wolf pro I could get a 4tb drive of that for ~160โ‚ฌ
Arminio
Seagate Iron Wolf are ultra reliable drives
Arminio
Those and WD Red is what I'd get if you can afford that
./pascal.sh
160โ‚ฌ for 4tb is fine
./pascal.sh
and I think I have an ssd somewhere laying around where I can put freebsd on
Arminio
Sounds good, yes. I have no insights what the current prices for rotating disk drives are, I decided to go full SSD years ago (RIP, wallet)
./pascal.sh
Full ssd is expensive yes
./pascal.sh
And I am not sure how reliable ssds are especially if it comes to important data like backups
Arminio
If it's actually important, better use 2 unreliable drives than 1 reliable one
Arminio
But yeah if it's serioiusly important decentralize it, too
Arminio
Over all the years of data hoarding there's this one thing I found out: there's data you HAVE to keep and there's data you'd like to keep (but can afford to lose)
Arminio
Make sure you at least focus on the former
./pascal.sh
Mh yes
Arminio
FreeBSD is comfy tier for file storage - you can't really go wrong with that :)
./pascal.sh
Yes that's why I'm picking freebsd over Linux I am running Linux on my PCs but I think for server use freebsd can get better performance And it should be more secure
./pascal.sh
also zfs is very nice
./pascal.sh
And yea the network stack of freebsd should get more performance than the Linux network stack
Arminio
Well it's less complex, that for sure. You might need some feature that FreeBSD doesn't give you on a few computers, depending on what you actually do with it, but if I can live with FreeBSD on some computer I usually choose that.
Arminio
It's mostly painless to keep a FreeBSD installation alive and going strong
./pascal.sh
Yes well if gets to gaming I have to choose Linux over freebsd 😂
Arminio
Understandable, yea
./pascal.sh
I am going to put my opnsense firewall to operation tomorrow and replace my fritzbox yay Then I am ready for gigabit
./pascal.sh
I finally accomplished to get into the internet with my new opnsense box
./pascal.sh
I had to setup vlans for pppoe and dhcp6 Also I had to enable both pppoe for ipv4 and dhcp6 for ipv6 I am now writing with my opnsense firewall directly behind my fiber ONT :D
./pascal.sh
Mh no I don't know any sry
Arminio

Today i had to add extra 1GB swap space to my fbsd workstation. I think OWA (using iridium-browser) was too hungry. 2020 - when 8GB Ram isn't enough. 😢
./pascal.sh
8 GB RAM is definitely not enough
Arminio
Depends on what youโ€™re going to do. Actually work with your computer? Absolutely possible. Browsing the web? Lolnope itโ€™s 2020 kek.
