https://linuxinsider.com/story/report-open-source-vulnerabilities-rampant-in-popular-projects-86564.html
{In this comment CS = Closed source \ OS = Open source}
Well, this gives me some mixed feelings.
CS software has a lot of bugs, because developers that write the code are "protected" as no one really can peak inside the code to "audit" it. Bugs can be found either by going through with well-known vulnerabilities and testing them on the program, wait till a major breach happends that is made by some hackers and we realise how they did it, or just by having luck.
Not a very nice scenario if we look at it, as CS software users are using a ticking bomb, that can explode any time. Not to mention that majority of customer people use Windows - which are not very "tech-savvy".
(Nice keywords, *NSA enters the chat*)
On the other hand, we have the OS programs that every person can audit. We can run some security tests from "templates". Attacks are nothing new, and we can hack-proof the software by testing well-known attacks on it. There's also the pressure on developers, that they can't run away from responsibility as easily as CS devs.
AND YET! SO MANY VULNERABILITIES!! What's going on? Are they all new kind of vulnerabilities? Are they the same vulnerabilities just spread onto many different programs?
All this looks very unprofessional. I think the programmers (even though I love them <3 ) are slacking off. They have an idea, they want to release it quickly, gain fame and/or cash.
Even on the website they state that "The most common CWEs over the past few years, across most top programming languages, resulted from fairly simple coding mistakes, according to Arkin. So development teams must make secure coding a priority. That includes training, as well as using automated tools and processes to detect potential flaws as early as possible in the development process."
Let me be like some old grandpas and say "Back in the days, programs were released once, and they were supposed to work. They didn't ask you to buy new CD with a security patch every other week."
But again, back in the days I was walking to a friend with a Floppy Disk, and now the risks are much higher because of the Internet.
Lately I'm watching "Baby WOGUE" on YouTube. They point flaws and nonsenses in software. Watching this channel backs my "TL;DR" that I'm going to write now:
TL;DR: The devs are just slacking off.

My local shop has after-leaseThinkPads T440 and T450
Geld [0/4๐] ๐ต๐ธ ุชุญูุง ููุณุทูู
Anyone has one of them? Are they good for FreeBSD? (I know there's a chart on the website, I'm asking about personal experiences)
g
probably

Geld T440 can be really powerful with some tweaking. Look here (a lot other thinkpads too, but T440s tend to be cheaper)
It should work fine with FreeBSD, but do a little research before buy like if the wifi and bluetooth card, would perform nice.
The rest is probably going to work out of the box

Any chance to see official support for docker in free bsd?
Krond
Why?
Krond
There was a nice docker port on top of ZFS snapshots. But it's not updated for a long time.
Krond
The general docker problem is that docker is docker-centric. They tend to do things the way they want them. And this is generally linux way.
Vincenzo
I read this https://wiki.freebsd.org/Docker

I'm trying to update from source but Make is telling me that "buildworld" is not a valid target for amd64
ษด๊ฉแดแดแด
Has the method changed in the latest versions?
Krond
Just built stable few days ago and there was no changes. Are you on current?

I am reading (just peaking) tar manual.
Geld [0/4๐] ๐ต๐ธ ุชุญูุง ููุณุทูู
funny.
I can't create an empty tar, I get an error
tar -c -f archive.tar
But I can make a file, add it, and then remove it
echo "I like cats" > cats.txt
tar -c -f archive.tar cats.txt
tar -f archive.tar --delete cats.txt
