i admit some bsd advantages over linux, to name a few overall consistency, zfs and jails, but unfortunately i run into troubles with foreign packages from ports systems, whereas i had never (actually until today, see https://www.archlinux.org/news/nss3511-1-and-lib32-nss3511-1-updates-require-manual-intervention/) experienced same problems with linux
melvin
oh, and of course bsdinstaller being broken (at least 2-3 months ago)
melvin
maybe beastie detected linux on neighbour partition, but justworking didnt work for me
and this imo due to lack of popularity
hence bsd maintainers need to break that loop somehow
melvin

>nobody fixed the bug with fetch since freebsd 10
definitely my fault because i should have fixed it myself, but i need freebsd installed, yet to do it i need (as official manual says) working fetch...ЕГГОГ ЕГГОГ LOOP DETECTED
melvin
there are one already
melvin
iirc the topic was about problem when using bsdinstall to fetch base.txz and there somebody pointed out that fetch wrongly calculates file size for downloads over ftp. it results in bsdinstall hangs at 99% of downloading base system
melvin
but what really surprised me is that topic was related to 10th release
melvin
because it was more convenient for me atm to fetch base using installer. if i knew this os better i would probably just perform chroot install, but since i was novice i decided to follow the documentation
melvin
i just typed http url by hand and fetched file successfully
melvin
i don't really want to start holywar here, i think all oses have their purpose. if there was more novices (i.e. eyeballs) this bug would be fixed already, and consequently yield even more novices which is win-win. just wanted to point out that it is pity that bsd receive less attraction than linux (imo mainly because of lawsuit with at&t)

they is gender neutral
Gender neutrality is easy in Chinese,
他 he
她 she
它 it
These characters are all pronounced as TĀ, so if you want to be gender neutral, you would say
"until TA discovers 1k+ other oses..."
And it's up to the listener to assign a gender or just think of it as of "that person". Nice.

nice

Personally, I have 2 opinions about GPL vs BSD
1)The GPL make it so the code must be available to the others. Yet, any codr based on GPL *must* also be GPL. Now, IMO this is
1.1)Nice,because it makes sure that the code will remain open.
1.2)Bad,because you are forced to open your project, and in some cases that just won't work (more below)
2)Now, on the other hand, BSD Licence allows a "future" developer to make the source unavailable to the third party.
This is:
2.1)Bad, because private companies will just use the code, make their own version spending funds, make it closed source and the BSD world won't gain ANYTHING, except yet another product that they can say "BSD is popular, X uses it in their code". So what? BSD don't benefit from it. It just gives an opportunity to make some competition, but at what cost? The cost of developers' good heart.
2.2)Good. Well, the argument I am going to use might be wrong, stupid or invalid, but that's what I think. By looking at BSD License, I know that it allows the code to be closed. By knowing that, I'm deeply deeply surprised that BSD is SO unpopular in an user group perspective. (I know routers etc. use it, what I mean is normal user base, where Linux even though is small probably have a several magnitude more usere). Why? Why? People can take the code, make it closed source and IDK publish it or even sell it as a product. It would be great to have companies release programs and GAMES for BSD. They could see profit. And with that it's more interesting to the companies.
Does any really expect some AAA games to be open source? Are games an exception? In linux world any non-open source program gets smashed with dirt. Yet, people want games on Linux. Why won't they yell at game developers for releasing (idk) games that are not open source?
In my opinion, this is what must be done in order to make Linux and BSD more popular in an user world: Get over that "hate proprietary, love open source" bullshit. First, let the proprietary software come, let companies try to sell products, let user base grow, let the Linux/BSD get more popular within normal users, then make open alternatives, and then go with Open source if you want.
Chicken-egg problem is real.
Windows gained so much because it allows things to be closed source by default. People weren't expecting things to be open at first.
>Gain companies' attention
>gain users
>make alternatives
>????
>profit
(my opinions might be obviously wrong. This is what I think. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong)

I know that Linux and BSD serve different purposes. Sorry if I generalised things by treating them both just as a PC operating system.
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
Side note: I love open source, I'm not against it. I just think people should stop being mad every time a proprietary software comes out in Linux/BSD world.

Ummm...
Using Weblate as stated at https://wiki.freebsd.org/DocTranslationOnWeblate gives no entry of a Polish language. I was writing a self-introduction to ask to create a language in there, but then I saw this:
https://www.freebsd.org/docproj/translations.html
https://people.freebsd.org/~blackend/data/docproj/translations.html#polish
And there is indeed A Polish language.
The FreeBSD Polish Documentation Project
Web: http://freebsd.therek.net
E-Mail: bsd@therek.net
Documents available
Some tutorials
Documents currently being worked on
Handbook
So, can I just contact bsd@therek.net or shall I send a self-introduction to both bsd@therek.net and freebsd-translators@freebsd.org?
Any suggestions?

any idea why my mic volume is so quiet?
g
yes
g
why does this have anything to do with it
g
i just want mic volume to be normal
g
i dont want to joke around
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
Well, how about testing the microphone for a second on another device? If you haven't changed any setting, if the microphone is silent on another device, then it's the microphone. If not, then we know it's the current system that you're using.
g
i have no other device and i only got the mic a hour ago
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
Ok. Silly probabilities incoming:
System has no mic boost enabled?
System has no mic enhancement enabled?
Is the input sink lowered somewhere?
Is the physical connector clean?
Maybe the output sound is low so you think that your mic is low while your whole sound is low?
And the final question that ought to be asked first!!!!
Did your previous mic work properly?
If so, if you plug it now, does the volume also suffer?
g
laptop mic works

this is a usb mic
