I’m not expert, but there is still problems on Linux on Wayland
Nameful
if u r interested in wayland.....try hikari....
oo, hadn't heard of this before

Nameful
I've been using GNOME Wayland on my laptop for a year now
Nameful
Works great
Nameful
But that's in Fedora
Arminio
Do you guys use FreeBSD as your main desktop OS?
I use it on an X220. WM/DEs include XFCE, i3, OpenBox, spectrwm, Fluxbox and some others.
Nameful
tried GNOME Wayland on my desktop which has an NVIDIA GPU though, results were not as great
Arminio
Whatever you mean by “main”, I probably use my Macbooks way more often.

as in, whatever you most commonly use to get your work done

Works great
Depends the hardware and what you want to run. What I’ve read
Arminio

I use a Macbook in the office if that answers your question.
Nameful
Depends the hardware and what you want to run. What I’ve read
If you got moderately recent AMD or Intel graphics hardware you're good
Arminio
That being said, I started to use FreeBSD on desktops with FreeBSD version 4 back then.
Nameful
What do you prefer about FreeBSD over some Linux distribution?

aahhhh....i remember 4.3 works great with amdk6 out of the box....
Arminio

I couldn’t even remember what specs my systems back then had, but I remember I used it with 2 17” or 19” CRT monitors in a dual-head setup and I was quite happy with that. :-)
Arminio
What do you prefer about FreeBSD over some Linux distribution?
Amount of layers of problem solving is less (at least I feel that way about it) - a lot of things are simpler (not all, and I hate some aspects about FreeBSD, too). What I value the highest is stability.
Anonymous
What do you prefer about FreeBSD over some Linux distribution?
Its conservative way of implementation. The design does not change this much. If you search something, you know which folder to look at.
Anonymous
Stability, and bugs are fixed, instead of having a work around implemented
Anonymous
What do you prefer about FreeBSD over some Linux distribution?
its easier to find pkges installed.....all are in /usr/local/etc
Anonymous
pf in built in
Arminio
/usr/local/etc holds settings, not packages.
Anonymous
/usr/local/etc holds settings, not packages.
He meant /use/local and the etc... I think
Anonymous
/usr/local/etc holds settings, not packages.
yesss....agreed....but theres where to locate pkges if u xknow where to find
Anonymous
By the way, FreeBSD is not a mess

Sorry for nitpicking :)
Haha, no problem
Nils
Hi
Nils
Where are the groups rules?
Arminio
Where are the groups rules?
Pretty simple. No Linux related usernames, no avatar images with hashish in your hands, no meta-questions. 😉
Arminio
*runsforcover*
Nils
Okay, alright. Before you ask about my avatar imags that is chocolate
Arminio
I was just trolling. 😊
Nils
Oh. 🙈
Arminio
I doubt there are any written rules here, just use common sense. :)
Nils
Ah, okay 👌
Nils
What is the current state about freebsd and nvidia btw?
Arminio
I didn't own an NVidia GPU in more than 15 years now, but I'm pretty sure someone here does.
Arminio
I believe his question wasn't Linux related, though.
Nils
So I should prefer iGPU?
Arminio
So I should prefer iGPU?
Intel or AMD is well supported from what I hear - NVidia has 2 driver options, nv and nvidia, where the latter one is the proprietary one, if I remember correctly.
Arminio
Is the proprietary one alright?
I really can't say, I avoid NVidia since almost 2 decades now.
Nils
Oh. Okay 😆
Nils
Everyone here avoids nvidia. I should too, I guess
g
bsd is nice
Nameful
Does FreeBSD still use it?
g
can you run steam on freebsd?
Nameful
In Linux, after nv died, it was picked up into mainline Linux and became Nouveau
Nameful
can you run steam on freebsd?
There's no native Steam package
Nils
linux's steam probably works
g
probabl
Nameful
linux's steam probably works
Through the compatibility layer?
Nils
yes
Anonymous
nv is still arounf afaik....n there are also ports for nvidia.....optimus card still havin issues...
Nameful
yes
Why is your profile picture a photo of what looks like almost entirely eaten piece of chocolate?
Anonymous
if u have a dedicated nvidia cars....go for the ports...
Anonymous
cards
g
it runs just about as fast as any system

linux's steam probably works
I have Void linux all games working fine

I have Void linux all games working fine
Very interesting. I'll read more about Void Linux.
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
Source: https://itsfoss.com/void-linux/ Final Thoughts Void Linux took more work to get to a useable state than any other distro I have tried. Even the BSDs I tried felt more polished than Void. I think the tagline “General purpose Linux” is misleading. It should be “Linux with hackers and tinkerers in mind”. Personally, I prefer using distros that are ready for me to use after installing. While it is an interesting combination of Linux and BSD ideas, I don’t think I’ll add Void to my short list of go-to distros.
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
Arminio
Void is an awesome distribution. I run it since many years.
Arminio
And that being said, Void takes much less time to get running than most of the other distributions I know of, once you get the hang of it.
Arminio
In fact, it’s my number one go-to distribution for any needs where I can’t choose BSD.
Arminio
General purpose only means that it’s not targeted for any specific use and that you can make it transform to anything you want it to be
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
I see. Thank you.
Arminio
If I can anyhow help with Void, let me know.

Ok! If anything comes up, I'll write.

https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-announce/2020-March/001941.html "FreeBSD Office Hours: April 1, 2020 18:00 UTC" Hello everyone This coming Wednesday at 18:00 UTC we will hold the first "FreeBSD Office Hours", an interactive online event where users, contributors, and developers can ask questions and get advice. We are still experimenting with the format, but the first iteration will be an open Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/yak-ydnk-rnc That will also be recorded and posted to Youtube later in the day. We are still seeking some additional src, ports, and docs committers to help field the questions as well. -- Allan Jude
