yes.

but the documentation mention xorg.conf....
Krond
Old documentation.
Arminio
Xorg is decades old, many decades.
Anonymous
then I understand that there is anybody updating documentation....right?
Arminio
It would totally be possible to display GIFs on it, I think just the messenger would have to add support for it. It already displays nice coloured stickers and it scrolls pretty damn fast and responsive.
Arminio

Well over all these years, there were changes. It could well be that someone overlooked to update the documentation. If you find such a thing, update the docs yourself and make a contribution.
Arminio
Also what Relitticon said. xorg.conf is, just in fact, still being used. It's just generated automatically on startup and you can put things in your own xorg.conf file in your filesystem to override what was generated.
Anonymous
it seams that it is reading it from /usr/....
Arminio
Basically people at some point in time just wanted Xorg to goddamn start and present a useable desktop in favor of X not starting up at all.
Krond
There are many places. Historically it was /etc/X11
Krond
(If someone remembers times before Xorg)

it is strange that FreeBSD is being used by many companies even with an outdated documentation...and at the same time I feel confidence about it...:-)

if i m not mistaken it has always been /usr/local/etc for ports n packages in freebsd n other bsd variants...
Krond
At least it works the way it's written in docs…
Krond
You know, XF86 was part of some BSDs.

hey guys. i would like to add an bsd to my system, do you have a good tutorial to install bsd onto a luks volume? like chroot in linux? thanks!
Алик Сережевич
Man bsdinstall
Anonymous
the installer is able to use luks? i dont believe that xD
Anonymous
there is no single one installer for linux which is able to do that...

I've talked to Ken Moore from the Trident Project and he seems to be pretty nice.
Arminio
He also said that ZFS is a bit of going nowhere right now in FreeBSD
Arminio
And I'm really interested about this. What's the current state of it? I was planning to use ZFS on FreeBSD for a fileserver lately.
Dog
I thought FreeBSD was already working with ZFS

I thought FreeBSD was already working with ZFS
Of course it does, I use it every day.
Arminio
But the Linux ZFS implementation is in heavy development while ZFS on FreeBSD isn't that much it seems?
Arminio
Not sure - I hear that quite often in the recent past
Arminio
I have no issues with ZFS on FreeBSD
Anonymous
zfs is workin great on freebsd...now they are tryin openzfs ...the person whose in charge of zfs is alan jude
Krond
The problem behind ZFS was that FreeBSD and Linux version had common upstream that was falling behind. A lot of fixes was never making it into other side. So it was decided to join forces with ZoL to share code and patches.
Dog
that's great to hear different points of view, thanks for sharing.

Sticker on the laptop said "Optimized for Windows XP (or better)", so I installed FreeBSD on it.

I honestly think FreeBSD should stick to illumos ZFS instead of pulling ZoL

The number of commits to ZFS from Linux developers has been massive.....i think that is one of the reasons....
tim
i know that
Anonymous
n illumos then moved to DelphixOS. However, Delphix have now announced they are moving to the Linux port.
Anonymous
n so on....
tim
but ZFS is one of the main reasons for FreeBSD
tim
migrating to ZFS on Linux might cause people to think "why even use FreeBSD?"
tim
when there is a up to date Linux version
tim
And Linux has a bit more support in terms of user basis and hardware
Anonymous
many reasons why ppl use freebsd....besides zfs....which is integrated....

progress on illumos is slow....

yeah but the "killer features" have just disappeared over the last couple of years
Anonymous
FreeBSD can bundle it in the installer, and put the root filesystem in a ZFS dataset. Because of GPL incompatibility with the CDDL, Linux cannot do this. A compliant installer must put root on something else, usually ext4 or xfs. A Linux installer iso putting root in a zfs dataset opens a terrible legal door.
tim
Canonical is already offering ZFS via the installer

When I started with FreeBSD in 2012-13 I was told that FreeBSD network stack is much more advanced. With linux 5.0(?) this advantages has become very small. Jails was considered a big advantage but the Linux community™ has docker by now. Linux emulation was a big thing but is hopelessly outdated by now. Some folks are telling me that no systemd is a big advantege but that's just autistic. I have seen only a handfull of sysadmins using a non-systemd OS bc of systemd. Some implementation details are nice compared to Linux like limiting closed-port-responses or some sane default behavious but again mostly sysadmins dont care enough to make a switch. The only real reason is like the license itself bc GPL can make software completly useless.
tim
Or need the ZFS on their consoles
tim
i still like freebsd tho
tim
just under the impression that it might get less and less relevant over the next years
Jay

Which hardware was supported by Linux but not FreeBSD?
