Is anybody using on FreeBSD AVM FritzWlan USB-Stick?
Anonymous
Hi I know this seems like a strange question but what do people use FreeBSD for in this channel
Anonymous
So what interested me In it is it purportedly, well new genuinely excellent network stack
Anonymous
Is that so much so that somebody has taken it And actually made a user space network stack based off of itl
Anonymous
Admittedly I only used it on a virtual machine to test but I have to say I found the performance to be mediocre at best not just a network but the whole feel of the thing I found sluggish
Anonymous
Say I wish to send a very high packet rate, simple syn scan for example
kub-kun
kub-kun
Well at least i'm trying to convet from Windows to FreeBSD on my main maschine
kub-kun
And I run freebsd on one laptop
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
kub-kun
Eliab/Andi
kub-kun
well i might concider making 180gb partition for freebsd and 46gb of ssd for windows boot
kub-kun
and entire 1 tb hdd for windows
Eliab/Andi
kub-kun
kub-kun
and I might buy and 1 tb pcie ssd
kub-kun
and replace it with my old one
kub-kun

Eliab/Andi
yes :D
Eliab/Andi
Do u use stable or current
Eliab/Andi
Ah i see

Thx for the hint. I do not dare to upgrade, as long as I have 'balanced' my data over several NAS and workstations. Huge task, if you are a kind of datahoarder. I do know by now to setup almost indestructible zfs-mirrors or zpools (in general), but I do not have any practical experiences with dying systems. Once this is lived through, the way forward is paved... 😉
Eliab/Andi
Would u recommend to change pkg from "quarterly" to "latest" on FreeBSD 12.2?
Eliab/Andi
Well, I use FreeBSD as Desktop ;)

In menu plasma in FreeBSD I don't have buttom restart, shutdown, sleep and hibernate
How I can add this?

Hi Friends, how to install skype in freebsd, your suggestions are greatly appreciated
Andriy
Phil
hey how can maximize the speed on dd ? I put bs=1m and i got 62MB/s .. but I want to have 400MB/s how can I speed it up ???
Phil
yes I already looked in it
Phil
hmmm
Phil
no really there is no explication about it
Phil
you can found speed that limits but not setting the speed that i want
Mikhail
Phil
or maybe a pastebin ???
Phil
https://pastebin.com/yN4i2it9
Phil
so do i need to set bs to :
>>> 3000592982016 / (400*1024*1024)
7153.97115234375
Phil
so something like bs=6m
Phil
so i already did this and speed was
bs=6m 47MB/s
bs=1m 62MB/s
Phil
sudo dd if=/dev/da0 of=/dev/da1 status=progress conv=noerror,sync bs=1m
^C58235813888 bytes (58 GB, 54 GiB) transferred 937.010s, 62 MB/s
Phil
is it seen as a block ???
Phil
bs=n Set both input and output block size to n bytes, superseding the
ibs and obs operands. If no conversion values other than
noerror, notrunc or sync are specified, then each input block is
copied to the output as a single block without any aggregation
of short blocks
Phil
So where am i wrong ???
Mikhail
is it USB drive? USB2 or USB3?
Phil
it's a SATA disk connected via USB3
Mikhail
it's rotational drive. HDD. it's expected speed. I doubt that HDD 5400 rpm can bring you 400MBps.
Phil
It's a brand new HDD and the constructor specify that the speed is 400MB/s
Phil
but why I can't go with this speed ?
Mikhail
Mikhail
"
Internal Data Rate
147 MBps
"
Mikhail
this is only promise found by me
Phil
the HDD : https://www.boulanger.com/ref/1001937

Mikhail
OK, try to avoid USB stack. USB3 is powerful, but it adds overhead.
Phil
from dmesg
da1 at umass-sim1 bus 1 scbus3 target 0 lun 0
da1: <WDC WD30 EZRZ-00Z5HB0 0> Fixed Direct Access SPC-4 SCSI device
da1: Serial Number 201701000037
da1: 400.000MB/s transfers
da1: 2861588MB (5860533168 512 byte sectors)
Mikhail
400.000MB/s transfers - it's external aka bus speed.
Mikhail
it's not real speed. It's limitation of disk controller - bus controller speed.
Phil
ok so it means that's is a some theorical value that i can't use ??
Mikhail

is it same?
Phil
yes it could be that
