Hi I know this seems like a strange question but what do people use FreeBSD for in this channel

So what interested me In it is it purportedly, well new genuinely excellent network stack

Is that so much so that somebody has taken it And actually made a user space network stack based off of itl

Admittedly I only used it on a virtual machine to test but I have to say I found the performance to be mediocre at best not just a network but the whole feel of the thing I found sluggish

Say I wish to send a very high packet rate, simple syn scan for example

well i might concider making 180gb partition for freebsd and 46gb of ssd for windows boot

and entire 1 tb hdd for windows

Main OS as desktop workstation. I'm a strong advocat for the "zfs-workstation" => it's advantage: never dying, ever growing file server (life-long companion). Network stack will become important, when I'm going to setup own webserver.

Thx for the hint. I do not dare to upgrade, as long as I have 'balanced' my data over several NAS and workstations. Huge task, if you are a kind of datahoarder. I do know by now to setup almost indestructible zfs-mirrors or zpools (in general), but I do not have any practical experiences with dying systems. Once this is lived through, the way forward is paved... 😉

At my current learning pace rather not. I think, in general, the more specific tasks you want to perform with your gear, that is, the more specific packages you track, the sooner you are willing or urged to switch to 'latest'. For me, it's an indicator of your technical expertise/interest...

OK, try to avoid USB stack. USB3 is powerful, but it adds overhead.

400.000MB/s transfers - it's external aka bus speed.

it's not real speed. It's limitation of disk controller - bus controller speed.
