I was running ZFS on i386 512Mb amazon instance.
My smallest zfs-system was TrueOS on Intel D201GLY2A - Mini ITX - Intel Celeron 220 with 1GB RAM and 2x1TB HDD zfs-mirror. Never lost a bit... 😉

It's proportional, to optimize the system. Free RAM is useless.
