zfs-(RAIDZ/Mirror)-drives theoretically should work slower than other (single) drives. This is partially compensated by lz4-compression. Like you, I noticed lately a similar effect, e.g. opening firefox on a mirror with 2 SSDs (128GB of size, containing approx. 1/3 of data).
Hammer2 is said to be high-performance. Never tested it, but they had performance comparison statistics on their website, AFAIK.

Recent benchmarks show freebsd is not the fast os

I'll show the source tomorrow

Thank you. I've seen ups and downs. There are many areas that can be fast and slow.

It's the same one I saw. Almost 2 years old. Though sad.

Ok

But it still the same version of freebsd that actually we're running

Oh, I run 13. Hopefully most users run 12.1.p8 by now

The TrueOS (-current) one has all debugging flags enable (making it slower).

PC-BSD was coolest era of the whole development branch. I've been following TrueOS and Trident thereafter and - as sad as it is - it never regained that much attraction, since they left KDE and went for Lumina instead. Still wondering, why this step seemed so inevitable to them...
Anonymous
Lumina is a poor desktop environment

By now, Trident moved into the Linux realm. Reasoning: "FreeBSD is pretty much dead!". This leaves 2 options 'for the rest of us': either we believe FreeBSD will eventually vanish, or it will remain 'forever'.
Anonymous
Personally, I hope for the latter.
Anonymous
Pondering a lot about this question, recently.
Anonymous
Making any OS run on your computer isn't hard at all. When I'm choosing a server-grade OS, then I'm interested in 'installing once and using it for [ever/a veeeeery long time].
Anonymous
This means, it has to have the ability to absorb or integrate waves of fashions, styles or preferrable 'techniques' over time. I think, this is the hardest part.
Anonymous
Especially, when using a Desktop Environment (DE)

In all BSD channels there is happening brainstorming from time to time on how the next big evolutionary step could look like.
