I mean WSL should work in ReactOS without any changes, because goal of project is to run programs as Windows without changing programs
Douglas
Douglas
Speaking of ReactOS running programs as Windows, does TrustedInstaller exist in ReactOS?
Douglas
As a service for updates and package management but under user control on ReactOS instead of how Windows locks that away from the user.
Douglas
It first existed in Windows 7 and ReactOS intends on replication of the function of NT 4.0 up to Windows 7, right?
Stas'M
Douglas
Not yet
Neat, so it is planned
Stas'M
No it's not planned yet
Stas'M
As any feature appearing in ReactOS, it happens spontaneously
Douglas
How does one apply to help developing ReactOS?
Stas'M
GitHub repo => Pull Request
Douglas
I heard a requirement is having never seen Windows source code as it is a "clean room reverse engineer"
Mike
Oplkill Алексей
Also you need to pre-setup your github account to your real name and family name
Mike
this would be by far the best thing. i don't dislike linux, i used it for many years, i abadoned it bcs it didn't fit my needs anymore and bcs i was annoyed by its fans
Mike
linux is great, but imho we need an alternative to windows. a reaction os... wait, there is reactos!

It's a common requirement for legal open source projects, this is also applicable to Wine, Coreboot, and more
Mike
the thing i noticed: if you have a limitation in your workflow in windows, everyone says it's annoying and it's like that. with apple, it's your fault. with linux, it's your fault and you are called an idiot or they say you are a ms spy or every kind of shit. i'm old enough to be pissed off by this. well, reactos (and haiku too) have way less toxic fans than other oses.

not many bad experiences tbh, but i get annoyed quickly and i hate mirror climbings

It's just a joke group name. Its not official position
Stas'M
yes it's a meme

Anyways, been watching this project for many years and I am very happy with the recent Explaining Computers review of ReactOS. Looking forward to SysWoW64 development so the 64 bit version can integrate the 32 bit version libraries.
Douglas
Probably going to throw the image on an old laptop to try it out. If I can't contribute code anonymously for 'legal' reasons, can I submit bug reports anonymously?

I guess the main idea that video should be available until it fully fixed
Douglas
So I've had an idea that I wanted to share for a long time and wanted to hear feedback from the ReactOS community.
Douglas
I have heard of people making community service pack updates to old Windows operating systems like Windows XP and that in the past something called OS/2 Warp existed that allowed someone a direct upgrade ptth from Windows to an IBM operating system.
Douglas
That OS/2 Warp was the start of the Windows NT architecture after Microsoft bought IBM's NT out.
Douglas
What if ReactOS played the same game that IBM did back then and made a direct update path for old Windows operating systems of the NT family to ReactOS?
Douglas
Replace all the proprietary code with open source software as a system update.
Douglas
And that this could be done as far back as Windows 1.0 as there is an upgrade path from that far back all the way to Windows 10 32 bit.
Douglas
Say for example someone had a fresh NT 4.0 install. Someone then maps the whole system and then writes a system update package to 100% replace the proprietary kernel and software with ReactOS equivalents installing over the NT 4.0 install in place while keeping user files and applications as a proof of concept.
Douglas
I release this thought as creative commons zero 1.0 content. ;3
Mike
really, reactos will remove the need for the old windows
Douglas
Douglas
really, reactos will remove the need for the old windows
Exactly! The more the ReactOS project matures, the more seamlessly ReactOS can replace old Windows installs. So why not take advantage of the system update features in place in old windows installs to install ReactOS over old windows installs while keeping all the drivers and configs.
Douglas
Like swapping out the engine in an old car
Mike
Fair point. Idk about legality and complexity
Chungy
A "Files and Settings Transfer Tool" (seen in XP forward) probably makes more sense than attempting in-place upgrades.
Chungy
Even Microsoft never got the upgrade bit perfectly right. It'll be even harder for a non-MS operating system
Douglas
Chungy
Aye. NT's OS/2 subsystem directly came from that code. It was last seen in Windows 2000 and removed in XP.
For NT 3.1 through 4.0, Microsoft also released Presentation Manager for NT, allowing graphical OS/2 1.2 applications to run (eg, Word and Excel work). It wasn't released for 2000, limiting you to console applications only.
Douglas
Chungy
You could try, but I think implementation details (where compatibility isn't affected) may make it a herculean task.
Nothing is strictly impossible.
Chungy
Microsoft pulling off "upgrades" from Windows 95/98/Me to 2000 and XP (pre-SP3) was kind of like that too. Totally different OSes, kind of impressive how well it worked, even though it still made a rather buggy/weird end result compared to a clean install. 🤣
Chungy
They've tended to avoid true upgrades in recent years too, preferring the clean install and automated Files and Settings transfer.
That's where the "Windows.old", "Program Files.old", and "Users.old" directories come in. Literally the old OS install (and MS has a guide on restoring it if needed, basically just booting the install CD then renaming folders).
Mike
Nowadays you can't even reinstall over a damaged installation (which is dumb AF, BTW)

Project seems pretty dead but it was a cool idea, I guess if Windows is gonna die some day, this could revive
Jose
Indeed, it is a live project with its community and developers.

I have faith reactOS can go somewhere daily drivable some day
Idaho
I don't know when tho
Idaho
Maybe when people start switching to Linux and realize its a pain for many things
Jose
Ah, ok 😁
Idaho
What I'd love to see is full support for og Xbox hardware and xbe support for reactOS
Idaho
I wonder how hard it'd be to implement
Idaho
I guess xbe can rely on hardware features of the Xbox so making it platform agnostic would require extensive weird patching
Stas'M
Parents,
I heard a weird noise coming from my child's room. I checked, and he was reading Windows Internals Vol. 1, specifically on the Windows I/O system. He also wearing some computer virus swag.
Has anyone seen this before? What do we do?
Thanks,
Martijn
