From the boot messages, I take it QEMU ported over to the native/console mode. Not quite a "Linux now controls the PC" thing, but still neat.
What I expected: LOADLIN from the 1990s, where you could boot Linux from a running MS-DOS system, and it took over the entire system. (Basically how Windows 3.x worked too)

I wonder if that is possible. Someone more aware of NT architecture might correct me, but I think the file systems are only read-only mounted at that stage, and that's how chkdsk obtains an exclusive lock to change FAT/NTFS metadata as necessary.
If that's true, and if Linux can properly punt ntoskrnl out of memory, it might be possible to really boot it.

It was the Linux kernel interfacing as a kernel driver with the NT kernel. As a kernel driver, running on ring 0, it can (badly) behave to take over the entire system.
Windows Vista started the kernel protection mode to avoid badly behaving drivers to take over the system. It had a side effect of effectively disabling a lot of antivirus softwares that used this technique to protect the NT kernel from bugged drivers being exploited to take over the kernel.
ReactOS can have this kind of feature (kernel protection) under the user control.

I don't know if running a driver under a VM can still allow that driver attach to the kernel, as kernel mode drivers usually do.
