Great, going to share after a 64-bit achievement!!
Stas'M
Maybe it's also worth to take the most interesting moments from it and upload to ReactOS youtube channel
Stas'M
of course if The_DarkFire_ is okay with us doing it

3 hours are too long, yes.

did i read well? so, smp/smt is coming on reactos???
Mike
😍
Mike
I've been waiting for this for a long time 😍
Mike
And that's why I love this project. Slow, but steady and reliable

Not so reliable yet. Much better than 2014, but still can react and explode in any second.
Eris
ha, react

Still good to hear. Iirc, russian tests showed that reactos was 10 to 15% faster than xp on the same hardware. Adding SMT/SMP, this could increase even more. Also, I hope reactos won't have the core number limitations that some versions of Windows bad
Harrison
Before we launch SMP,we shall do 0.4.14 stable first 😏

<hbelusca (Gmunu=8PiG/c4Tmunu)> yeah well you are comparing a debug build of an OS (ROS) with a retail build of another one (Windows), so no wonder you get discrepancies.
rosbridge
<hbelusca (Gmunu=8PiG/c4Tmunu)> Find a debug build of Windows and test it in monoprocessor mode.

Stas'M
Is this supposed to fail?
it's supposed to return an empty string, the first character is being checked for ANSI_NULL
Harrison
NULL string pointer ignored in NtUserDefSetText, while test expects it to be set to a empty string, am I right?
Harrison
Will try

I just figured I’d jump in and explain really fast: Even if I some how manage to get SMP Hal’s to work beautifully. There won’t be a single performance increase ROS kernel isn’t ready for multicore yet. That will take more time then getting the Hal’s working. It’s a step by step process
The_DarkFire_
of course if The_DarkFire_ is okay with us doing it
Go for it, But I’ll probably get some clips if anything looks cool for you guys anyway :)
Victor
ReactOS is still significantly slower than Windows on a uniprocessor kernel. SMP isn't a magic jelly that'll make it go fast. :P
we're not focusing on performance optimizations right now. Just some major stuff like allocator
Chungy
Aye, I was just noting that SMP support isn't magic :P
The_DarkFire_
You’re 100% right. But it’s even less interesting at this stage then it sounds on the surface lol
Chungy
You can see also back in the 1990s when both Linux and FreeBSD changed from uniprocessor-only OSes to SMP ones. They both had similar techniques of starting out with a global kernel lock that made things less than ideal until they started whacking the weeds to make more fine-grained locks that wouldn't halt every CPU core. ReactOS is likely to have a similar direction when SMP is added...
Victor
But I wonder how that would work when we do an optimized build with clang and LTO
Chungy
It's kind of funny now that uniprocessor systems almost don't exist anymore (except in embedded systems)
Chungy
Yup, incremental change :) You can add SMP without doing too many other things at once.
The_DarkFire_

<hbelusca (Gmunu=8PiG/c4Tmunu)> In the meantime Microsoft got it correct from day one.
Victor
linux/minix and BSD are just older

can the current telegram logo be the new bootlogo?

Linux is just a bit younger than NT. But yes, Microsoft focused on SMP from the start. The Unices had to retrofit it.
Mike
I fully agree that SMP is not magic and it'll take time. I understand that speed is not the most important thing now. But I'm happy for these first steps, really happy about them. Eventually reactos will fully support SMP. It will take time, sure, and a lot of work and updates, but every voyage starts with a step 👍😊
Mike
So, maybe I've been too optimistic, but not believing in impossible
Victor
as far as I understand, linux was written after minix in the beginning. And didn't bring much stuff on its own
Chungy
Minix was first made in the 1980s and originally ran on the IBM 5150 (with the 16-bit 8086 CPU). Linus was using Minix to start development of Linux; though contrary to some belief, LInux is not based on Minix.
rosbridge
<hbelusca (Gmunu=8PiG/c4Tmunu)> NT started in 1989.
Chungy
and Linux in 1991. Thus, Linux is a bit younger than NT :P

Checked; as of behavior of Windows 10, I think ReactOS is not implementing this API correctly
