Of course. I’m anti government.
monopolies are bad for the economy, they stagnate markets and eliminate competition, which also stunts technological advancement. like, what are you even doing lol
Tobiyo
well technically linux is a monopoly too :p
Tobiyo
and its not even sellable

Tobiyo
90% of servers run linux, smart tvs run linux, android is build on linux

Tobiyo
i didn't say it was :p
my point is linux is a monopoly

in this case, it's probably more that people just prefer linux over other OSes when given the option. it could also be something to do with the compatibility of software, but seeing how BSD can run linux stuff, i don't think that's the case.

GNU/SystemD/Linux
Petrus
Yes, GNU is being taken down too
Petrus
There are some projects moving towards BSD philosophy

GNU/SystemD/Linux
bah more like gnu/systemd/x/wayland/linux at this point and i still missed something in that list :p
Tobiyo
Tobiyo
well x is technically also integral to the os :p
Chungy
No, it really isn't, and X is going away in the near future.
Chungy
X is an optional addon basically, one that could provide the resources to run a GUI, but unless you have an NVIDIA card, it's not even the one you're likely to be running anymore.
Tobiyo
it kinda lives on as a wayland compositor iirc
Tobiyo
what is going away is the x11 protocol
Chungy
backwards actually. the x11 protocol lives on as a compatibility mode
Chungy
and considering wayland is baked into the Linux kernel, it's also way more "integral" than X ever could be construed as, and even then, almost no servers are going to be using it :P
Tobiyo
baked into the kernel? the wayland protocol is?
Tobiyo
did not know that
Chungy
the graphics systems are
Tobiyo
wayland is just the protocol really
Chungy
it was a source for people to unreasonably complain about it, but then there were both user-space and kernel-mode implementations done on FreeBSD and that shut them up
Chungy
anyway, as far as the operating system is concerned, Linux is nearly always paired with GNU (unless it's Android or some busybox settop box)
Tobiyo
any links on what you mean with "graphics systems"?
Chungy
KMS and DRM mainly
Tobiyo
yeah we're not talking about the same thing :p
Tobiyo
anyway the "x11 compatibility" is through xwayland which is really just the xserver as a wayland compositor
Chungy
not necessarily as a compositor. It's used way more often to just run individual apps under an existing compositor
Tobiyo
i guess so

BSD license allows to get their code and close it, in as much as nobody will mess their original code.
Companies love that, their behaviour is close to bullies who copy homework from nerds.
Petrus
GPL doesn't agree with that and it's been attacked
Petrus
BSD has good points, in what remains to clean code, for example. But the 'permissive' concept hides learned helplessness within
Tobiyo
Ah yeah i agree
Tobiyo
Mac having a bigger share than linux in consumer space while the project the use as a basically has basically no share is a good example i think
Petrus
Yes, even if Apple returns some code to community, their main % of their technology is closed
Tobiyo
Yep~
Petrus
Google has turned to closed software in some of their services, such as Hangouts
Tobiyo
And then there's google

Petrus
It was XMPP compatible at the beginning
Tobiyo
Well google definitely is replacing more and more of the android component with their proprietary stuff

making AOSP unusable
Yep~ android is an abomination anyway with its closed source drivers pinning it to one kernel version per device

Not yet i guess the closest to an alternative ubuntu touch has the famous catch 22 problem
Petrus
There are some alternative projects which need support. PostmarketOS is one of them
Tobiyo
Its being developed by ubports at this point really
