Since you want to learn C I would try to solve some challenges in C. You can find challenges on codefights , hackerrank and many other sites. If you're stuck ask help in groups like this one or visit sites as cppreference to read the specification of the language and to get some examples.
I prefer this kind of learning since it's more interactive than reading a book. imo it's impossible to learn programming just by reading.
Another possibility would be to implement basic algorithms and date structures. For example try to implement an resizing array that behaves generally as std:: vector
