There shouldn't be any .a files, then. Only name.exe or name.out if it's a UNIX system.

If you want assembly code, use the -S flag, and for some comments in the assembly code add the -fverbose-asm flag: gcc -g -S -fverbose-asm file.c -g is used to add some debugging symbols.
