You never have an unlimited memory, so you have to consider limit your input size. For example:

char x[100],y[100];
printf("enter string x : ");
scanf("%99[^\n]%*c", x);
printf("enter string y : ");
scanf("%99[^\n]%*c", y);
lcs(x,y);
}
this will ensure that you will not have a buffer overflow.
