a syntax error ins the an error in the syntax of the program. i.e. the compiler expects something (for example a semicolon) and it is missing

a different compilation error could be, for example, using a variable not defined. Or trying to modify a const variable

Compiler(s) just hate the code from K&R book, the reason I don't recommend K&R book, when I just started to learn to code I typed everything in this book as it is, compiled with many compilers and got different type of errors like conflicts, I used to put an underscore before some function or identifier names and boom the code compiled fine.
