There are some good prebuilt options, like drobo or mySecureNAS

Gwindor

05:03:18
My server is a multipurpose one. :)
And NAS is basically a Samba disk.

Muhammad Najih

Gwindor

Well, it basically isn't any different from building a PC in case of hardware picking and assembly.
Software though would be different.

You can connect the laptop to network with Wi-Fi and use it like if it was connected by wires, it isn't any different user experience wise.
