Mysql/Mariadb have since the latest version upped their requirements fr password to crazy levels.

you need to edit my.cnf to bring it down to sane levels - and since you mentioned nextcloud, go with postgresql instead.

And opnsense infront of it uses haproxy to handle ssl and caching of non-changed content

Hmm, good question. I had this disabled even with GNOME, but surely someone knows how to change this behavior with i3.

To configure with xinput, I believe, will help you on i3wm.
