I am super happy with Gnome, but the wayland-flickers-in-vms bug is annoying, made me use RHEL 7 more than Fedora.

I loved the way it looked like and how customizable it was, but it would crash for so many random reasons. And on top it used to be quite slow with all the Akonadi stuff running on background.

I actually love PLasma 5. My only problem is that splash screens have no "Get new stuff" button. If you like what comes by default, good, if you don't bad for you. I don't like that.

I started to play with Sway on Wayland yesterday, pretty awesome, but still I think there are many rough edges (some X-based apps misbehave, no copy-paste for me etc)

Not really, Mint guys are just not happy with GNOME 3 HIG, so they created their own HIG for old school looking apps.

So XPlayer is just the old Totem etc.

Hardware acceleration is something that already exists in Fedora and Debian. About video playback... it depends on the format. MP3 and MP4 are shipped now with Fedora. Other codecs can be installed from repos. And others.... well, you have to look into RPM Fusion.

Knowing how scared of any features these window managers usually are, I would bet more on Sway replacing i3 when the time comes, but I don't really keep up with the development of both ;) Sway is usable now if you use a terminal and maybe a browser

You can use GNOME on X in Fedora, too. Just log out, click the "gear" button on the log in screen and choose "GNOME on Xorg". That option will be there for many release on, X is not going away that quickly.
