Everyone is different, we all have different tastes
It's okay to find something ugly
in the same way you can find something beautiful
it's just... an opinion

I get ya, man. I'm just saying that a lot of people will take stuff like that as an insult. For example, "You are ugly" VS "That makeup makes you look ugly" one seems less hostile than the other.

Chris

Like, I get what both of you are saying. Honesty is important, you don't want to sugarcoat. But also just saying "You're ugly" can seem like an insult. A small explination actually can be helpful, and lessen the blow.

when speaking in person your tone can change the meaning of your words
so it's hard to get an exact read on the delivery
How many times have you called your friend an asshole in a playful manner versus calling the guy that just cut you off in traffic an asshole
your tone changes it's meaning
if that makes sense

Jonquil

technically speaking, the word ugly is just the opposite of beautiful. it really isn't an insult on its own. it depends on if the person takes offense to it. there are some folks that are pleased to be called ugly, lol. However, I agree that clarity in communication, especially written, is paramount. Explain, explain, explain. Ask questions about what the other person's intent is if it is unclear or vague.
