I never do it by hand, because I download via BitTorrent when I can

TBH I'm pretty sad that it's 2017 and we still don't have BitTorrent support in web browsers by default. A few years ago Opera had it and I had hope, that one day it will be possible to download Linux distros via BitTorrent by simply clicking a link to a .torrent and let the browser do the rest the easy way

Because bittorrent evolved to be quite often be regarded as the ideal network for applications where you simply dont have the bandwidth to do otherwise. So in the dream of making a simple downloader that doesnt seed anything back up you make a legally more attractive but torrent-destroying application. Also we all know how it'd get used instead.

It's torrent-destroying only if you want to rely only on the p2p aspect. But if you'd use webseeds + help from peers but don't take peers for granted, then it's still better than downloading stuff from http only.

And how it would be used instead - just like normal http-downloading functionality is used currently with file lockers. We should not let the piracy scare us from better technologies.
