Not sure you can go by student exchange program, but going to some second-league university's postdoc after you have your diploma is definitely an option

The step your missing is that you need to switch your desktop before login. Do you have Fedora Workstation? Also what version?

If you use a nomal Fedora Workstation 24 or 25 you should have a button at the left of the button "Sign in" (after you choose your user). There you need to select the desktop. After first selection, this will be setted as default

Why not simply removing the group kde, not the whole kde-desktop-environment?

Maybe you could force gdm to use xorg to test, edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf and remove the comment #WaylandEnable=false to WaylandEnable=false reboot to test

As a side note: This is why I don't mix DE. I did it once in the Fedora 17 days, never more.

I did it in F25, but with cinnamon spin as base (sddm by default)

And it works pretty good

Sometimes the installation means something like "plasma-session" or similar named package, which means that the desktop is installed but no entry is added to the DM.

Having one DM or another shouldn't affect. I've been logging in KDE using GDM without an issue.
