what I'd do, is I would use some light display manager (LightDM?) to take care of the autologin, and then some light window manager (i3, awesomewm, or even just a kioskwm) to show the application on fullscreen

you probably can do it without the display manager at all, but I don't really know how to do it cleanly

I can start the application fullscreen, that is not an issue. I don't need a login manager.

hmm... maybe it would be possible to make a systemd service, which would start your application as a given user without the need for a login manager

that's what I do right now. works like a charm.

other ideas that I have are to do the console autologin somehow and put the application startup in the bashrc or so, but I would prefer the systemd method better, as with the bashrc one if your application crashes you'd be left with a usable shell

other would be to change the shell of one user to that application, so login would run it automatically, but I wouldn't go that way

My problem is not starting the application, but creating the live USB image in the first place, never done that.
