Yeah. It's been a year or so since I used KDE last time, they really changed

I'm going to install Fedora Workstation on a netbook (Acer Aspire One, 1GB RAM, Atom N450, 250GB HDD). Any suggestions or advices?

Fedora loves Python! ?

You will have bad User Experience with an Atom and 1 GB of RAM

Oh. I see.

Yes, I installed Debian here. But now I thought of trying Fedora, the same media I used to install on my laptop and it seemed to work fine.

Of course, I don't mean to do any heavy work like video editing. Rather for emails, writing my stories and some programming.

I have Cinnamon and Mate on Debian, installed on that netbook.

Using the live media I noticed the netbook's touchpad works better than the laptop's ?

Well, I can try both and see what works best.

Gentoo is an experience and definitely a little more of a wild ride, but some people are looking for that. I think you'll find more stability from Fedora in that regard.

They're exactly the opposite extremes. In Gentoo you have to compile and do everything manually by yourself. In Fedora programmes come already packaged and most of things work out of the box.

You can install both and learn from them. ?

Yeah, I had a CentOS 6 machine at the time and had zero idea what I was doing, so I installed Fedora 20 a week after its release to try to get a handle on that. :P

The Workstation is the "default experience", more or less. If you're new to Linux and just want to get started, you can use that. It uses the GNOME 3 desktop environment which is the one Fedora is most well-known for.

Justin

There's also other "spins" that feature different desktop environments. Perhaps some of them might feel more familiar: https://spins.fedoraproject.org

There's also some cool labs that come with preinstalled tools for different uses. Some of them are pretty cool: https://labs.fedoraproject.org

If you want to explore around and see different options, both of the above sites are good ways to do that. If you just want to get started and play around with options later (since you can always change desktop environments later), you can use the Workstation.

Cinnamon is my personal favourite from the spins. You can try it live and if you don't like it, try others until you find one you like enough to install.

Cinnamon is definitely nice and easy to use if you're coming from Windows since it's not too different from the Windows 7-ish desktop.

Yeah, it's the initial configuration I have to get through, and forcing myself to keep using it even if there's something that makes me want to revert. I even had a list once but I can't remember what I did with it.

Only need to add comments to config, disable lines that won't work anywhere except my system, include lockscreen script and statusbar config in an archive. :)

Won't take long.

For lockscreen script, you should only need scrot from nondefault tuff. Also, terminus font for the config itself. Feel free to play around with it, @jflory7.

And everybody else, of course.

Welcome aboard.

XFCE is lighter, KDE is on par, I think. I personally udr very light i3wm, but it isn't any close to what you see in OS X and Windows.

I'd recommend to look at screenshots of each one, or even try them yourself and then decide. :)

Ugh, I think higher resolution is necessary here.
