I put WaylandEnable=false in the config and restarted gdm, but no dice. I saw the display flickering for a moment, then black. Xorg log has no errors, last entries are systemd-logind: got pause for 13:37.

the system assumes that if you dont have a password you are not the kind of user to be trusted manually changing their de.
