Speaking of Cinnamon, I remember the poor experience I had with the applets/themes/addons back in the days when I last used it. It was horrible: Some were incomplete, some crashed the whole desktop, and some simply failed to install at all. It's been years since I last dualbooted, but back then, when this happened (what you are describing), you had to fix the master boot record of Windows.
