For example, IBM ThinkPad T60 cost $130 here. With battery and charger.
Though, I managed to build a working server from all the salvaged equipment

I mess up my system :D

Hey hi!

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:10:57
And I think it will go to hell soon!!!
@Kohane o/
Well, I learn something today: "Don't kill PIDs of processes you didn't know" Or more specific to my case: "Don't kill PIDs of processes related to dnf/yum"

Paul
06.02.2017
20:13:26

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:13:38
Yeap

Paul
06.02.2017
20:14:00
You know what's fun???? Killing PID 1!!!!!

Google

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:14:09
Now my system said that I just have 2 packages installed in my system
:D

Paul
06.02.2017
20:14:28
I used to know how to clear yum's cache but it's been a while.

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:15:05

Paul
06.02.2017
20:15:46
When I last used Fedora regularly, it was still on yum :P
Which was a lot more fun to say than dnf

Kohane

20:16:10

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:16:24
I was just restarting my laptop, and when I start the session, I make my usual terminal session start: dnf clean all && dnf -y update
(Yes, I update packages daily)

Paul
06.02.2017
20:17:35
Good, you should

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:17:45
And the process says: Waiting for PID XXXX
I don't remember the number

Kohane
06.02.2017
20:18:11
yes, and?

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:18:12
Well, I kill -9 that process and a really beautiful nightmare begins

Kohane
06.02.2017
20:18:31
I can imagine so!

Paul
06.02.2017
20:18:33
You shouldn't be using kill -9 unless SIGTERM fails anyway
Or SIGINT

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:19:19
Now is working, but I had to play with a lot of things, and now the dnf list installed tells me 2 packages are installed in your system: fedora-release and fedora-repos

Google

Paul
06.02.2017
20:19:32
9 = SIGKILL, which doesn't give the program a chance to shut down cleanly
I assume it was a cronjob that was compacting/cleaning the database.
However, such a cronjob shouldn't be working on an active database anyway; it should lock it, copy it, then atomicly rename it over the old one when it's done. I consider any different behavior a UX bug.
Of course, if you file a bug report, they're just going to tell you not to kill random processes. But what if your computer had lost power?

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:21:26

Paul
06.02.2017
20:21:46
(And they'll definitely tell you SIGKILL is evil, which it is)

Eduard
06.02.2017
20:22:01
I don't know if I can reproduce this, but know I don't know if I can restart my laptop anymore

Kohane

That's interesting
I just learnt something new! ?
