Well I joined the #fedora-telegram IRC group to see what it looked like from both sides. I believe #fedora-telegram didn't exist before this bot. I suspect this group+channel combo will always be Telegram heavy.

However, if #fedora-latam chooses to discuss the issue about a bot on their channel, they can make the decision that is right for their community

I for one feel like most IRC channels are too high traffic to want on my phone. In a few cases the channels are very low traffic, but that also means they are not urgent for me to have on my phone.

I think that what we are really facing here is that we have a potentially very wide audience that would like to use alternative communication channels and we need to figure out how to join our community together where it makes sense so that no one is left out

I am not sure that bots that mirror channels are the best solution - but I'd be interested in seeing someone do some thinking on this and proposing solutions that think about communication modality.

I also believe that there may be a good solution in ircb/waarta if it can get some love to get finished

but this is a beverage-of-choice conversation :P

I understand that. I happen to use 2 different bouncers run by other people right now :) so I know why I don't want to deal with it. That said, I am not sure that this is a great bouncer solution long term ... but it is a fascinating use case.

agreed, but the 1-way communication bothers me as it traps some people outside of the conversation. But if that is what LATAM wants .. it isn't my place to say it is wrong

Man, that was mean... I didn't realise what he was saying because I didn't understand the word and I thought he was just mistyping something or using slang. But I didn't expect an insult. ?

If you check the history, 90% of the group is the bot. It's spamming heavily. Also there's a certain disconnection to the users that get resent by the bot. It's a psychological thing. By not seeing their name, their avatar, you can't really differentiate who is saying what. You can't click on one person's name and talk to them in a private chat if you have fruther questions. I don't really know who I'm talking to in that group. Are there 50 people listening to what I'm saying? 500? 5000? I don't know.

The point is that I liked Fedora LATAM and enjoyed talking there.

Now I don't anymore.

Of course one solution would be to leave. But leaving is not the perfect solution to everything.

The fact that IRC doesn't support most of Telegram's features (editing messages, stickers, any kind of media) doesn't make the situation better.

pionen: Good idea, actually. I will try that. Not a perfect solution either though, as some people might reply to what the bot resends and I'm left confused.
