Installing GNOME is easy, but getting rid of KDE is difficult

Kohane

Yes, because the Scientific Spin comes with KDE by default, it's KDE at its core.
But exactly why you want to get rid of it?
You can use Gnome completely ignoring KDE

@Dhanesh95 , I'm pretty sure you could just start with Fedora Workstation 24 and then install the Scientific Lab group from DNF

I can do that!? ?
Yes, I haven't used the scientific spin before but I'm going to assume htat if you were to install the Scientific group via DNF, it wouldn't install any extra desktop environment.
since there's a separate group for "KDE Plasma Workspaces"

I had no idea that there exists a Scientific Lab group
I obviously don't want to go through the efforts of installing all the packages manually
Thanks for the help!

If you install Workstation you will have to install all the programmes by yourself. While in the Scientific Spin they come mostly preinstalled.

It comes with KDE but the point of the Scientific Spin it's the tools not the desktop. Otherwise it would be the same installing the KDE Spin

VirtuosoJ
17.08.2016

I'm not confused about that
The point is Dhanesh doesn't even want the KDE desktop to be installed, hence my proposed solution

Just checked. There is no Scientific group to install via DNF/Yumex
But there are all the scientific programmes from that spin available under Applications => Engineering & Scientific
Ah, good @VirtuosoJ

Hi, I'm coming from Linux Mint Cinnamon (Trusty-based) and considering switching to the Cinnamon-Spin of Fedora.
I hope to get a similar UI and general experience, but with more regular updates "under the hood" (e.g. I can't install Mesa 12 on Trusty except maybe when compiling from source).
Are my expectations realistic?
Oh, my hardware is an ASUS UX32VD Ultrabook, a few years old. It has a dedicated NVidia card that i'd like to use with primus and maybe for some CUDA programming.

Hi! I have a laptop with Nvidia card and it's working fine so far.
Actually, it works better on Cinnamon than on Gnome Shell, who knows why.

I see. Well, it was a pain to set up in Mint, so I expect it to need some work, I just hope it will eventually work ^^
Also, gaming is not my primary concern, mostly CUDA is important to me, but I would use it for gaming occasionally

most drivers have an option that says something like, "if I'm not REALLY heavy on resources, use this ELSE use that one"
if your graphics has support to do so

I followed this guide: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee
I chose the managed repo and it worked flawlessly, I only had to run dnf reinstall bumblebee-nvidia because the blob somehow wasn't installed in the first run
jhoeke:~/ $ vblank_mode=1 primusrun glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
8169 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1633.687 FPS
jhoeke:~/ $ optirun glxgears
5387 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1077.297 FPS

Working flawlessly with the GNOME DE?
I used the Cinnamon desktop, which is forked from Gnome Shell but with the look-and-feel from Gnome 2 (a bit more modern though)
https://spins.fedoraproject.org/en/cinnamon/
As I said earlier, I'm using the Intel Chipset for regular stuff, only activating the NVidia card when needed
NVidia Prime or Optimus or whatever they call it

You probably want to do the same, so it doesn't really matter what DE you choose, as long as they work well with the Intel Chipset (which is well supported AFAIK)
