Really? Great news! I'm excited that there are alternatives to Telegram Desktop so that we don't have one centralized program.

I'm thinking of donating some money to a Telegram client that is not Telegram Desktop so that we have more variety.

The protocol and API are open, so anyone can write a client. There a plugin for Pidgin, Cutegram, web client,...

Last time I checked neither of the unofficial clients supported supergroups. Web client doesn't count as a desktop client.

So if one wants full feature support and a real desktop client then Telegram Desktop was the only choice.

Because if there's only one client, they might decide to make something to it that community doesn't like and there will be no alternative. For example they decide that most users are Windows users so they drop Linux support. Just an example, there are thousand scenarios that could happen and because of that it's good to have variety.

Forking is an option, but the codebase is big and it's a lot of work to compile Telegram Desktop (because they patch Qt) so you need a lot of manpower to maintain and compile a fork.

maybe in qt5-qtbase-devel package
