He copy&pasted the introduction of Tanenbaum's book into his work about operating systems, and when the professor asked him what computers are based on he was "Eh..." "What's the universal language of science, please?" "English?" Me, from the background: "Maths" Prof: "Thanks" And that was his best work.

In the US, degrees for computer industry jobs is sort of optional. If it's important, it's so a company will look at your resume or not. It's more about experience and certification.

But still generally important since it's a common practice to filter out job applications without degrees

I switched trough three goddamn monitoring systems before i settled on one - did the first one work? Yes! Would it have served me well and continued to work? Yes! But there is always more research to do.
