I don't see how that's possible... if they distribute a product that has GPL in it, they have to also release the source, and any competitor can also use it
Joey
if they don't release the source, the EFF will help you sue them
Vieta
Also the Fsf

Microsoft uses mit only afaik for their oss projects
Vieta
Apple makes bsd to apl(which is backwords incompactile and not preferd by the fsf) if they want tp contribute. See darwin for instance
Joey
in C:\Windows\system32\drivers (I think that's the path) you will find this directory called "etc"... and in that you find a hosts file and other goodies... snatched from BSD, long ago
Joey
Cisco's original gear was FreeBSD

Hi everyone I'm new to FreeBSD. I was on virtual machine but now I want to install it on the main system
Anonymous
But there is a challenge, I have a SSD Hard and I want to install the system on it. But what should I do next with HDD Hard?
Anonymous
Joey
What challenge? Is there anything on that hard drive you want to keep? Then back it up. Then install FreeBSD on it. The installer should recognize it.
Anonymous
A challenge for me, Because I could not find training to solve this issue. I do not have anything important in that Hard, but then as I said, it is useless and then I have to assign it to a specific partition or keep miscellaneous things in it?
Anonymous
what ever IS on it bsd most likely be able to see it.
Joey
training? don't you understand that experience is proportional to equipment ruined?
Joey
but seriously, to move past being a novice or newbie, you need to move from training to experimentation, and then to understanding
Joey
so pop in the DVD or USB stick and install FreeBSD, I bet you can figure it out
Anonymous
may be he should try using ghostbsd first live cd to check out the hardware before installing.
K.
If Apple is BSD, why don't we have drivers and applications on FreeBSD as they are available for Mac OS X? Is that something to do with BSD license and freedom? Like, companies (or Apple) makes apps and drivers for MacOSX but they don't care to share the code or to make it available for FreeBSD, let's say, for whatsoever reason. Actually the reason is most probably a profit.
Joey
under the hood OSX is most certainly BSD
Joey
but again, the BSD license is a license to steal
Joey
you want a vendor to give back their changes? GPL your code
K.
As someone mentioned earlier, how do you make profit then?
Anonymous
ya make and sell software people really want like solarwinds.
K.
To sell software under GPL license?
Anonymous
no to peeps that wont share it cause it's got that fbi warning on it
Anonymous
that's the way i understood it too. tho i suggested he try ghostbsd live cd to test out hardware.

As FreeBSD from Linux. Also some GNU devs using BSD license aswell as MIT. The BSD components are also comefrom OpenBSD not FreeBSD. The LibreKernel only uses GPL btw. But the generic one is filled with cooperate stuff. Tragically FreeBSD reliese on Linux to much IMO. I mean who remembers on Gnu/Kfreebsd?
Joey
K.J., RMS (the guy that wrotte the GPL) sold emacs on tape (I think it was tape) to companies at over $100 a pop
Joey
FreeBSDebian was a flop, indeed
Krond
FreeBSD linuxulator? While it's mostly fine for running most of software it really was luckying support in a few areas.
Joey
Krond, Debian shipped a FreeBSD kernel and their userland, years ago: https://www.debian.org/ports/kfreebsd-gnu/

If bsd would be gpl, well we would get kernel source of playstations, which can be after some work used to run basically any os on it. Without jailbraking and waiting on relic system version for jb.
シノブくん
if that were the case, they would not use freebsd at all...
᠌᠌
Thats how its suppoed to be. Its good that there is something stable also without GPL
᠌᠌
But there are manufacters that doesnt follow gpl rules
᠌᠌
Example is chineese head unit i bought to my mustang. There is no source code for kernel available.
᠌᠌
I want to compile it with udf and iso9660 support to get external dvd rom working on it.
᠌᠌
But no luck as they didnt followed GPL rules and didnt provide kernel source

I understand why would they use BSD other than they like the license. The system is good, otherwise they wouldn't use it at all. Don't you think so?
Do you think the license could be the only reason?
᠌᠌
᠌᠌
Or worst scenario, they wouldnt use bsd then.
K.
BSD as a system is better than Linux in my opinion
K.
But GPL makes sense too
K.
I don't have anything against BSD license either
