But it doesn't even have a graphic desktop

FreeBSD consumes so much system resources with only 6 packages ?
It depends on how the script counts the packages and how it sums used RAM. To get an accurate measure you'll better use pkg and top utilities. Plus it's a vm so not the best way to test performance (:

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Nomad, 26 Dec 2021
I need to get a sticker with that lol

He has a point though. Unused RAM might mean software needs to load more from SSD/HDD because it doesn't use the RAM available for caching Chrome is a different story.
Badugar
ZFS uses the systems RAM as a cache if no other software uses it. In my eyes that's neither bloat nor wasting of resources
XS
1GB per TB (without system and apps) is fine, more is always better
Neruq
Does Nomad still exist? I remember that you could not update the software that detected the system as vulnerable.
Badugar
ZFS is recommended for 4 GB RAM and upwards
Not necessarily. It worked on my laptop with around 2GB without problems

If >=1 dataset is set to dedup=on then yes
Neruq
It depends on the brands, because there are brands of toasters that at the slightest activity shoot to 70 or more than 90%, the resource consumption and as the temperature and its frequency cores soar.

on an install with zfs 4 disk raid are those partitions or independent disk or doesn't matter ?
XADE
Neofetch only had like 1 dependency
even deps has their own deps
XADE
i used to get less than 400mb with graphical bspwm + zfs

Could you explain that a bit further please?

hi, does anyone here use emacs exwm as wm? Install emacs-devel and through the elpa repo package I install exwm but it throws me a problem with xelb, and xelb is installed as a dependency of exwm

My vimrc config without plugins: https://github.com/yutyo/vimrc

Hi, how can I make with few threads? Like on linux -j option, is there something similar on freebsd?
Ihor
Same as Linux
While "make -j8 install clean" or something on all ports just got error and the compilation is just stop
K
Try lowering the number. Try 6 or 4

While "make -j8 install clean" or something on all ports just got error and the compilation is just stop
Note the -jN flag sets the number of jobs. This can be useful to speed up builds in multi-core processors. You can determine the number of cores present in your machine by reading the value of sysctl hw.ncpu
🇵🇸🍉
anyone run freebsd on m1?
Ihor
Are you sure your error is related to -jN ?
root@ihor:/usr/ports/emulators/virtualbox-ose # make -j24 --- config-conditional --- --- do-config --- *** [do-config] Stopped -- signal 22

ghostbsd reports as freebsd-13 as of now.
G
You don't need freebsd to learn python
G
But yes you can develop python on freebsd
G
Just search in the packages for python and install it
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Install the package pkg install python3x
G
I would suggest a 3.x version, the latest python3 available
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Yeah, and then just open your favorite text editor and pick the reference manual for python to start learning (:
G
and then saveyour script with a name such as ... firstscript.py
G
and then just run... ``` python firstscript.py ````

or some tutorials online
Sure. Format is up to each one

is there a way to have an encrypted drive that can be mounted cross platform? linux/freebsd/openbsd/netbsd using gpg/openssl is not really practical i think because it is only for individual files and would need space to copy the decrypted version and evey file would be encrypted individually. i guess that having a FS in a file would work, maybe in conjunction with a RAM disk. and only writing back the changed blocks to ease wear on the disk. is there a filesystem that would not rewrite a block if it's the same? maybe porting GELI to openbsd and linux would be good enough?
トミ
ZFS native encryption
so this feature is "production ready"? and because freebsd and linux use the same ZFS code base it would work out of the box?
トミ
Yes and yes
now if only openbsd had ZFS...
K
Oh, right..
トミ
Oh, right..
brb, i'll go port ZFS to OpenBSD 😜
