django default authentication backend did not "checking for a user that matches this email/password combination". it will authenticate based on UserModel.USERNAME_FIELD which as default is username. means, you can use user = authenticate(username=data.get('username', None), ...) or create custom user model that override USERNAME_FIELD or create custom authentication backend
