You're pointing to a stack memory with your pointer. It's cleaned after you exit your function. Else you have a lot of memory leaks

Just as a small suggestion, instead of doing char *returnDate() { I would change it to char* returnDate() { It just makes more sense, since the function returns a char pointer. The way it's written makes it look like you have a function pointer that returns a single char.

It's better not to return pointer allocated on hear at all from functions unless you're implementing allocator or use unique_ptr in c++
